I got an email today saying my visa interview will be on April 7th.

My fiancé in the US has yet to file her 2020 tax returns (we can do it in the next couple of days) so I am not sure if the scheduled interview date is too soon. We want to use her 2020 tax returns as she well exceeds the 125% poverty limit but her 2019 tax returns barely make it.

Should I send an email to my embassy asking for a later interview date? I read another post saying it would take roughly 2-3 weeks for my fiancé to get her IRS transcript which might be too late. Or if I keep the date, should I file the 2020 tax return ASAP and just bring the 1040 + all W2's for the 2020 year?

I would not reschedule if I were you. Bring what you have, if they need any additional documents you can always submit them later once you gather them.

I guess it would slightly delay my visa getting approved but possibly not as much as if I were to reschedule?

Keep the date and use your 2019 tax transcript.  My fiance just had her interview and they had no issues with using my 2019 tax transcript. I included my 2020 W-2 form but she told me they didn't even look at it.  The consular officers know how tax season works and that the IRS just started processing returns.

There are other (better) ways to show current income, which is what matters. Pay stubs, employment confirmation letter, etc.

If it means a lot to you, you could always just bring along a copy of a 2020 W-2(s) if you have that. That’s the most important piece that shows the income was made in 2020 anyway. Though the income comes from less traditional sources, you can bring whatever else your partner planned on filing with the IRS to show income.

Do that.

Do not reschedule. Rescheduling during COVID will not be kind to you.

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

We just had out interview a week ago.  My fiance brought my 2019 transcript, copies of my 2020 1040, which I had mailed but had not been processed, W2's for 2019 and 2020, bank statements, and employer verification letter to show financial status.  They understand that 2020 taxes may not be filed yet or processed yet.  Your fiance should have the 2020 W2 now, they are required to be sent on by January 31 2021, so there is no reason you can't get completed 1040 in hand by April.  Get the taxes done and take the 1040 to interview.  Do not reschedule.  You'll be fine.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I will be doing this 🙂
