Obtaining Daughters SSN After Green Card

Hello,

I received my SSN through my EAD/AP card but my three year old daughters was never processed and we both have our green cards now. I called the SSO today and they told me that she would need to do a new application but because she is three she doesn't get an interview so it has to be my mail. I need to send her green card, passport as well as my passport and her birth certificate and they will mail it back. I really do not feel comfortable sending all of those documents considering we need them and they are hard to replace here. Is this really the only way around it? If it is I will do it but I thought I would ask here first as it makes me a bit nervous!

Thank you!

You will have to balance the cost (replacing a set of critical documents) versus the benefit (slightly lower taxes).

Not worth it to me.

See this link for what sone immigrant did who stood her ground to force an interview

I did call a second time and mentioned things she did like I need to have our green cards on us and she dismissed me and said people send them all of the time. Also that adults can be scheduled during the pandemic -like your example- but kids never need an interview so I either send it in or wait.

The risk of lost documents, so it's not worth it. Wait until SSN office fully open and go apply it in person.

I agree. I am not confident sending so much in especially when it'll be hard to replace.

The person in the Reddit thread said that contacting local congressman helped them: "I'm just thankful that congress were willing to help us."

"Help with a Federal Agency" or "Assistance Needed" page select Social Security Administration (SSA)

Adults also don't "need" an interview.

Thanks! They made it sound like they did. I am definitely not an expert as this is all new to me. I'll look into it!
Is that page on SS or congress page or somewhere else?

Pre-pandemic, I had to bring each kid to the SS office to get their SS card applications processed.

lol on "people send them all the time"

People shoplift all the time too.

For my wife's SSN, I called the SSA office.  They said we needed to complete the SS-5 form and send it in along with my wife's original documents.  The lady then said someone from SSA will verify that we qualify and then schedule an in-person office appointment.  I asked if we could send a copy, since we would ultimately have a face-to-face appointment and can show the originals then.  But the lady was adamant that originals have to be mailed in, that it is normal and is the only way.

We called a different SSA office, the one in a city nearby (we live in a small town).  That person said just to include photocopies of my wife's documents and bring the original to the appointment.  A couple weeks later they called back (after receiving and reviewing our application) to set an appointment later that week.  We went to the SSA office and it took about 15-20 minutes for my wife to get processed.  Her SSN card arrived by mail 9 days later.

The person handling phone calls in the offices do not seem all that knowledgeable.   You can randomly get someone who believes they how things should be handled and not even consider alternatives.  I would recommend contacting a differenct SSA office and ask if your daughter's application can be done in-person.

I sent my information in for my son and it was no problem.  You receive your documents back in express mail after they are scanned in by SSA.  I got everything back in two weeks after they received them.

I would call your local office branch and not the main number for SSA.
