Updating SSN after naturalization

Hey, what is the process for updating SSN records after the naturalization? Is there a deadline? 

Can it be done remotely somehow? It seems our local SS office is closed due to covid19.

No deadline.  You can send in your Naturalization Certificate or get your passport first and send that in.  I just did it and received the passport back in about a week.  Social Security offices are only accepting mail a few times a week even though they are open each weekday.  My recommendation is to get your US passport first and then send it to Social security with the Social Security form SS-5.  In the rare event it becomes lost, it's much cheaper to replace a US passport than a Naturalization certificate.

Personally, I'm not sending anything to SSA via mail. There is no deadline or impact of not updating your SSN. 

 

I'll go and update when they open up which should be late summer this year at worst.

I'm thinking to just mail passport card when it is ready. I thought it might take some time, hence worried about deadlines. I don't want to send passport book and naturalization certificate.

There isn't a set deadline. Update it eventually, when offices allow walk-ins, etc. again.

 

It should be updated before moving abroad and collecting SS benefits from abroad.

STATUS

01/29/2021 Friday           - Mailed the form and passport to the local SSA Office via USPS

02/01/2021 Monday       - USPS shows package was delivered

02/02/2021 Tuesday       - Spoke with local SSA Office. Was told that receipt was not in their system yet;

                                              Said could take 7-10 days to be scanned and put in the system; another 7-10 days for work-at-home SSA agent to process it.

 

02/03/2021 Wednesday - RECEIVED PASSPORT BACK and LETTER saying we would receive the SS card within two weeks!!!

 

02/16/2021 Tuesday       - SSA says my application is in their system.

                                              They expect to process it today or tomorrow.  System should show new status this week.

                                               Expect to receive the new SSA card in 10 days or so. Can go to DMV anytime next week.

02/18/2021 Thursday     - Received letter from SSA saying expect to receive the card within two weeks.

                                              We suspect we can now update my record at DMV,  but we will wait.
