My wife is a US citizen and i migrated to US. We are trying to get her last name changed to mine. On the social security website it states that we need to send the original documents. I am just scared to send original documents. We tried calling social security office 3-4 times last week and are just been put on hold. Anyone had a similar experience or got name changed recently through SS ?

What original documents are they asking for besides the marriage certificate?

Drivers license for identity. US passport is most likely to establish citizenship in case they ask for it and i am not sure about that.

They need original marriage certificate which we got from india. In case it gets lost in post , it will be another mission to get another original one from india.

They don’t need both a DL and passport to establish identity.

She should get a passport card. It’s a mostly useless  useless yet inexpensive  proof of citizenship and ID and perfect for this purpose.

Here in America we get about a dozen marriage certs as one never knows when they are needed. Marriage, birth, and death certs: get them in bulk.

I suggest getting a bunch of marriage certs before sending the one you have to SSA.  Since she needs to order a passport card anyway, you have time.

My marriage certificate is from india. I have been told that it should work as my migration to US was marriage based.  so i dont need to register it again in USA ( just clarifying)

Passport card is a good idea, thanks for that.

Yes I know your marriage cert is from India.  So get a bunch more.  From India.  I never suggested you register your marriage in India, nor does (afaik) such a procedure exist in the USA.
