  It is actually something new, because it is compensation for work done retroactively. Compensation when one person stays home (and forgoes a career) and the other person works is usually calculated going forward (as alimony) for what the person who stayed home has forgone in future earnings. Retroactively is usually done as a division of assets. Alimony would generally be much more than $7700 obviously and I hope she got that if she is entitled to it.

 

  I really don't agree with calculating retroactive earnings during a period when everything was done by mutual agreement. Unless there was a prenup, or if there was abuse of some kind that led to her staying home against her own will.
