Hi,

I received an email that I had an appointment for today at Kosovo Embassy to provide  "Statement that a U.S. citizen is legally free to marry - Kosovo authorities require all non-Kosovar citizens to obtain a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage from their Embassy prior to marriage in Kosovo. To obtain the No Impediment to Marriage, the U.S. citizen must come personally to the Embassy and sign the Statement before a Consular Officer. The Statement can be downloaded at the following link: FTM statement (PDF 27 KB). Do not sign the form as you will sign it in front of a Consular Officer."

I missed the appointment because this email end up in my spam folder.  By the way, I am not getting married in Kosovo, we plan to get married in USA.  But, being told I have to bring the document to  the  municipal hall in Kosovo.  Has anyone had to go through this?

Usually only required for getting a marriage license locally.   Not needed if you are getting married in the USA

YMMV

So this is something you need if getting married in Kosovo.

But you are not getting married in Kosovo

So why is this an issue?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

You need to prove that you are free to marry in order to be eligible for the K1. This document is something that you can get at the government office. It states that you are "single" and are not registered as being married to anyone else or else you will not be eligible for the visa. This is to prove that you are not trying to commit bigamy (plural marriage).

This is NOT something required for the OP who is a USC,  not planning on marrying in Kosovo.  If they were planning to marry on Kosovo, the answer would be different.

YMMV
