I helped my mom filled out her DS-160 for a B1/B2 tourist visa and it was denied in 2019.

There was a question in the form asking if the applicant has relatives in the US and I answered Yes, the relative being my husband (my mom's son-in-law)

Is that correct? I always wondered if having a son-in-law who is a USC caused her visa denial.

Back then I didn't think twice about answering Yes because answering No seemed incorrect. And because we are always encouraged to answer truthfully.

Any help is appreciated

Listing yes was correct since he is family... it’s hard to say why she was denied, but most likely didn’t show strong enough ties to Mexico

Thanks for the reply.

She had had a B1/B2 before but it was stolen in 2007. She was always confident that it'd be easy to get a new one cause she had already had one before, sigh. I knew it wasn't guaranteed and told her so, but we didnt know until she was actually denied.

The following were the correct answers:

  • No for "Do you have any immediate relatives, not including parents, in the United States? This means a fiancé/fiancée, spouse (husband/wife), child (son/daughter), or sibling (brother/sister)."
  • Yes for "Do you have any other relatives in the United States?"

Where were you living at the time? It probably looked odd to list a son in law but not a daughter living there. Anyway, listing relatives is only problematic for those who can’t show ties to home and would very likely be denied anyway. Lying on a form on the other hand can result in a permanent ban so encouraging her to answer truthfully, as you did, was certainly the right thing to do.

Do you mean her passport was stolen, or her border crossing card was stolen? If the latter, is there any chance it was used fraudulently by someone else?

I was and still living at home, at the time I was in the middle of uploading documents to CEAC. Now I'm just waiting for an interview date.

Both passport and visa were stolen, for all my fam includying myself except I got my visa again in 2012 but the rest of my fam didn't. Our house was broken into in 2007, we have a police report from back then.
