the way I was reading the consulate site is IF your marriage was witnessed by two muslims then its already valid in Morocco but if not then you will want to get it validated by the consulate

marriage validation

I htink you are reading that correctly. Now I am confused LOL Anyway I have my marriage certificate with offical government stamps. I am still thining that it might be necessary to go to a court in Morocco- Where is Bosco when we need her??????

I do not know the answer to that question, maybe you can call them.

My husband thinks it will be a good idea to send in the marriage certificate to register in addition to registering himself. He pointed out to me that on page 49 (#8), it says that if they are living someplace else they should register with that consulate.

More money I agree

I don't think so, and no, it doesn't. For us to register our marriage we had to go to this mosque in Anaheim where the scary, non-English speaking imam and a couple other guys asked my wife a few questions, she answered them, then there was a prayer, and that was that. We got an Arabic certificate saying (I guess) that we were married as far as Islam is concerned, and the consulate in New York was happy with it.

I liked the imam at the Islamic Center in our town, he totally reminded me of my mom's Catholic priest when I was a little kid. Thing is it's very hard to get ahold of them so we ended up in the (possibly) Wahabbist mosque. *shudder*

It is important for Moroccan's to register so that they have a link to get things from their country (ie. passport, national card..._). As for registering your marriage, it is done so that he is considered married in Morocco. If it is not registered then per Morocco he has never been married. Having it witnessed by two Muslims is required for an Islamic marriage. It doesn't mean that it is registered in Morocco. It is a valid Islamic marriage. We are working on registering our children so that they will be placed in his family book. This good for the children so that they have what they re entitled to as  a Moroccan and any inheritance that may be due to them in the future. The consulate is very helpful. Their hours aren't the best, but they get the work done.
