So my wife and I have been living with my mother in law for the past 7-8 months after moving from a different state. During that time we changed our official address to her house's address and also filed i-751 during the 90 - day window, in October.
Buying a house in this market is tough so we've decided to look for a month to month rental until we find a house to buy. We found a rental in which we'd stay for 2 months starting in March, with an option to extend it. The short term lease explicitly mentions that it's a "short term lease" for the period of 2 months.

To make everything simpler, we've decided not to change the address via USPS and keep the mail coming to my mother in law.

However, I'm aware that we must notify USCIS for each change of address. What I'm unclear about is temporary addresses.

What I'm mostly worried about is if I were to change my address to the temporary apartment, and find a house a few months later, and again change the address to my permanent home address, there's a chance that mail from USCIS would arrive to the temporary address and I will never get it.

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

I believe you can maintain a separate mailing address from your domicile address with USCIS, i.e. an address for where you are currently living and an address where you correspondences from USCIS are sent to.

Maintain your mother inlaw address as your mailing address, I assume you are all in the same metro area.

Otherwise get a P.O. box to use as a permanent mailing address as you move around town.

Thank you for your response. Yes, we're basically 10 minutes away so all our mail is going to get to her place and she'll notify if anything comes.

I was only worried about home visits which are not very common

You will be covered by keeping USCIS up to date with your most recent residential address. USCIS is not great about keeping up with your latest mailing address if they change so maintaining a consistent mailing address will be helpful.

You are right USCIS may investigate your home address so keeping them up to date is a good idea.
