While this process is exciting, there is a lot of unknown causing us a bit of anxiety. Using internet searches trying to figure out school for our kid, however I'm more confused than before I started searching . I'm estimating that he will be 18 yrs old by the time he migrates to Miami from Jamaica, that would be time for college right? Any suggestions on what can be done from Jamaica to prepare for college? He is currently in high school in Jamaica, will he have to do GED as well as SAT? If yes, what should we do? I just got another grey hair just from typing this😅

If he hasn't graduated from high school when he emigrate from Jamaica, then he could finish high school in the US.

Alternatively, he can sign up to attend community college once he's 18.  No GED.  No SAT required.  Based on his parent's US residency, he could even qualify for in-state tuition and financial aid.

I wouldn't start out with getting a GED, taking the SAT, or trying to attend a 4 years college.  Start off with community college.  It will be cheaper and better for him to be able to start college and live at home in a new country.

If he's going to be 18 is he doing 6th form? Or will he only have CXCs. He can start taking SAT classes in Jamaica if that's the route he'll want to go. Community college is certainly a good starting point or option depending on what he wants to do. If he has subjects we don't need GED. Also depending on timing he can take SATs in Jamaica as well so it really depends.

His school should have a guidance counselor. Ask him to talk to him/her. They normally have good information about these things as a lot of Jamaican students attend college after finishing high school in Ja.

Thanks a lot. He is currently doing 6th form. He is doing very well in Information Technology/Computer Science and would like to continue with that. I'm currently checking out getting the SATs done from here, because I don't want to stall his progress.

With his CAPE and SAT he can enroll in college so yes let him start studying. He can even apply from Jamaica but you'll need to make sure they don't have him as an international student bc tuition would be much higher and he might qualify for other aid as a permanent resident. SATs are only done at specific times in Ja so make sure you start looking at registering early.

There are some free courses for SAT online. I'd look into that. The preparation is more about learning how to take the exam and tips to take the exam. Even if you know the material, the skills are, for instance, how to answer multiple choice fast or ways of solving a type of exercise quickly.
