Whether you end up going with an attorney or not, it is highly advisable that you familiarize yourself with everything independently just like you would if you were applying yourself and make sure you review whatever is submitted on your behalf.

Although the process is indeed simple if you have no complications, there are many pitfalls if you lack knowledge or attention to detail. You should know your strengths, are you good at reading instructions and filling paperwork accurately and doing thorough independent research?

Just last week someone here filed a petition through marriage as an overstayer. Unbeknownst to them since their spouse is not a citizen (a permanent resident), overstays and illegal work are not overlooked/forgiven for such applicants. What should have been a simple petition possibly could end up a can of worms. There are countless others who have botched their petitions going DYI and similarly millions who have successfully gone the DYI route.

In conclusion if you can afford it, get a competent professional. Immigration can be make or break events in a person’s life.
