It's sad that boys are getting bullied for being good, sympathetic friends to girls. But this bit set my teeth on edge a little:

I find the term "friend zone" just as toxic as "simp." It sets up male-female friendships as ones where the whole point for the guy was to try to get the girl to date him, and when she refused, he's got to settle for being "just a friend." Two of my lifelong friends are men -- I've known both of them for 30 years or more. One was my buddy on walks in preschool! They're brothers to me, and we have all liked it that way for as long as I can remember. 

 

Now, this isn't to say that friendships can't blossom into romance (this happened for me), but getting turned down is part of the risk of putting yourself out there. "Friend zone" implies that friendship is somehow less than romance, when really it isn't. I have deep emotional connections with my male friends that outlasted a marriage; they have been there for me and I for them. I did try to date one of them in high school (my idea at first) -- it lasted three weeks and we couldn't bring ourselves to do anything more than hold hands and kiss (twice). We had zero spark and were completely relieved when we went back to being "just friends."

 

I don't blame a boy for trying, or a girl for that matter, but maintaining a friendship shouldn't be seen as a consolation prize.

   Fortunately a few years down the road and they will learn that you don't need to place too much significance on the social and dating skills you learn in middle and high school. Thank goodness for that.
