Hi there,

My husband is unfortunately no help since the only way he knows are college career centers, to which I don't have access since I went to college in Europe... I tried monster, careerbuilder and some other websites, but my area is never there or only for people with 6-10 years of experience....

I'm a communications professional with 3 years experience and a MA degree living in the Bay Area... Does anybody live here too with the same profession? I'm looking since Monday and I just can't find anything!!!! I worked in event planning, PR and internal communication.... And now - nothing!!!!

I looked for temp agencies but they only do financial, legal or graphic design.

Sigh, open for suggestions!

Loads of jobs in the Bay Area.

I would suggest working for one of the Universities. The UC system gives very good benefits, and is easy to work your way through the ranks.

You may well have to take a lower paid/responsibility job than you were used to, but just suck it up for a little bit and you'll do fine.

the other benefit to working for one of the Universities is that you can get tuition benefits at a lot of them, and bolster your qualifications.

thanks guys! It's just so annoying that so much is through because-I-know-somebody-who-works-there-referrals.... I'll meet up with my sister in law and she knows lots of people who work for non-profit companies around here, she worked for them before she had her baby. Excellent benefits and mostly fund raising, but since it's only for 6-9 months I'd rather take the job with more benefits ;)

I'll defenitely go back to grad school and will get a MS this time, probably biology or chemistry, since my hubbie will be an officer with the USAF pretty soon and we will be moving every three years, and that's good bye communications career... But also, nature science are more attractive to me (just did communications and marketing since it was supposed to be the job of the future, lots of opportunities, etc....).... :)

You bet. Benefits are the reason I keep working in this boring admin job at the UC

Anna C. - craigslist is a more down-to-earth job site - local employers with normal expectations post jobs there, but unfortunately, lots of people use it too, so there's hundreds of applicants for each job.

There's tons of event-planning jobs here, and they pay really well. If you get desperate, go to your local Employment Development Department, and they will help you find a job - their services are free.

I'll defenitely go back to grad school and will get a MS this time, probably biology or chemistry,

Good idea, biosciences is the hottest field in the Bay Area nowadays.

Yay for the UC's! (and for boring admin jobs!)

If I were in the Bay Area that's who I'd work for, Berkeley esp is a nice campus - lots of nice places to hang out and stuff to do after work. They have some really great Event Planning stuff there, so if you are into that I would absolutely recommend it - you'd get to work with the athletics dept too. Crazy on Football saturdays, but lots of fun.

hehe looks like we're on the same boat.. back home i was doing a lot of promotions and marketing for 3 years. www.craigslist.org is very helpful. Try Posting your resume there. I lived in San Mateo too but recently moved to redwood city. As of now I'm a Temp fulfillment Coordinator doing data entry and stuff, gets really boring cause my field is in PR. Unfortunately, since I got here I can't really relate with people so well cause they speak so slang that i'm not used to it. So I need to get use to the english here before i go back to marketing.. if i post my resume online, i do get a lot of callers but they expect so much from me because of my experience Grrrr!! Since I got here, It's like going back from scratch!:(

Hmm... if you'll be moving every three years, then that 6-9 months job is worth looking into (who knows, they may offer you other positions afterwards within the company)!

Going back to grad school is a great idea. I agree with the others about Craigslist... there sure are many job listings here in the Bay Area.

hotjobs.com and monster.com are by far the best internet job sites. i used to also do searches for companies in my area by using www.yellowbook.com - once you have a list of companies that you would like to work for in your area, go to their websites and see if they have any job postings. good luck!!

have you updated your resume? I find that other countries do things different and because I have had a lot of experience hiring people, I have made this to help other members make an "American Style" resume. The way countries work is different so having an up to date resume in the format that American companies are used to seeing may help you. Check it out...

My resume is up-to-date, so is my cover letter. Some of my relatives work as hiring coordinators in some of the bigger companies here. They evaluated my resume and found it to be top notch. Each of my cover letters is revised by my sis in law, a Berkeley graduate. Also my hubbie reviews them, a Dartmouth graduate. Capable hands I'd say....

I have some interviews going on, but it's slow. I have to come back for 3 interviews and stuff like that. A lot of companies simply emailed me that they want to hire people from the Bay Area only (aka people who were born here). That makes me mad, but I can't change that I'm not a Californian.

On craigslist they mostly look for people with 5 years of experience, but I found other things. Opportunityknocks.com is a good resource, but event coordination/planned giving jobs with less than 5 years experience are scarce, basically I have to start over. I have a referral going on to a very good foundation in Stanford, but was told straight away that they are like so many others odd about their hiring practice - locals only.

My impression is that social sciences jobs are simply harder to get as an alien than nature science based jobs. A MD will always have a chance, so will a chemist or an engineer. I think despite my MA-advantage I have to compete with all the college grads that did something like politics, history, English, literature.... All the non-science majors, they are flooding my field.

I'll start my Biology Masters next year at UCSB... As a military wife it's a good thing to do, since I'll focus on molecular biology and if based in the outback I can still work in labs in hospitals. ;)

Good luck to the others!

Hi there,

I'm really surprised that the companies are telling you that they prefer to hire local people....first of all, I'm pretty sure that's illegal because of discrimination. And second, I was born and raised in the bay area, and have you looked around lately at the number of immigrants? It's like at least 30%, probably much much more. So for them to say locals only, is just not right because the majority of the up and coming workforce are not from here.

I thought it is illegal, but I am anyway not a person who is fond of lawsuits. I assumed they just hire who they want to... But I must say the companies I talked with only hire people with college degrees, preferably obtained in the US. The local immigrants are mostly from Mexico and as far as I observed the situation they work in retail and other positions that don't require a degree... So those companies don't have to "bother" with immigrants. It also depends on the type of business - the IT companies don't care about ethnicity, smaller, local companies unfortunately do. On the other side some companies are so pro-immigrant that they want to hire mostly Hispanics, and they don't count me as immigrant, but as white. It's kinda weird, I'm not immigrant-like enough and not American enough. Sigh.

I am sure that there is going to be a job for me, it's just a "stony" way! I didn't expect to be discriminated, but I also understand if people want to hire locals, it's just not smart that they said it out loud! ;)

I think what they meant is that they don't want to pay for your relocation. I grew up in the Bay Area and never heard of anybody not wanting to hire anybody outside of the area.
