Articles have been released on many news platforms today claiming that the USA could be added to the United Kingdoms "red travel list".

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/united-states-spain-quarantine-flights-hotel-red-list-b920250.html

Essentially what this would mean is that anyone travelling from the USA into the UK would be required to quarantine for up to 11 days in a government listed hotel and pay £1750 for this or risk facing up to 10 years in prison.

I made plans to travel and visit my husband in the USA during May this year but now I am very worried and came here to ask what everyone else is thinking about this, especially those of us living in the UK. Admittedly, I am extremely concerned about whether a decision will be made to add the USA to the red travel list. Apparently, a decision will be made this week.

Well until a decision is made it’s pure journalistic speculation. I do feel that a lot of these restrictions are ####### for tat (“you banned my citizens from visiting so I’ll ban or inconvenience yours”). And they don’t even make sense. I do recall seeing that the UK wanted to establish a travel corridor with New York. At a time when New York had one of the highest death rates per capita in the entire world. Even now, if the US is placed on the “red list” it’s based on the average number of deaths per million which is artificially high due to a few random states. Here in Washington our death rate per million (if you even believe that all of these deaths were exclusively COVID caused and no other reason) is one third of that in the UK. If any travel corridor were to be established it should be with Seattle or Portland. But Brits love New York and probably can’t even find Seattle or Portland on a map.

Right now my feelings are “until I see it, it hasn’t happened yet” and I’m keeping an open mind on travel. One thing I have noticed is that the UK has used a large amount of fear and generated a lot of paranoia in their handling of this.

Well first you need to be allowed to leave, we are currently under lockdown still.

Who knows what things look like in may.

We are under lockdown but we aren't exempt from travelling to the US (providing that you are exempt from the presidential proclamation).

I agree, perhaps I ought to take on that mindset especially because I am extremely aware of the level of fear mongering in the media about COVID ever since March last year. I think they should be announcing any updates about the red list later this week.

Currently as of today in England at least (and this might change very soon) leaving the country for holidays is not a legal reason to travel internationally.

You can go to the US if you are moving there, in which case, being on the Red List does not matter.

It only matters when you are coming back to the UK.

Would it not be considered "essential travel" to see your spouse in a different country? Forgive me if I am sounding ignorant but I have been very confused with the rules here lately.

I very much doubt so. People are not allowed to travel to see their loved ones even within the same country unless they have a legally valid reason.

Or thats my understanding, correct me if im wrong
