Twitter permanently suspended an account belonging to Project Veritas on Thursday, citing repeat violations of the site's policies against publishing private information.

A Twitter spokesperson confirmed to The Hill that the main Project Veritas account was permanently suspended, while founder James O'Keefe had his account temporarily locked. Several recent tweets on O'Keefe's timeline appeared to have been deleted by Thursday afternoon.

That’s what happens when you give people an easy outlet to express themselves. There are a lot of idiots out there. An awful amount.

I mentioned something about a purge here once. I believe the answer was everyone must abide by the terms of service that were agreed to.

Expand

Except the terms have been shown to be arbitrary and changed or interpreted on a whim to suit the company when need be. For example on the same day Trump got kicked off of twitter there was a tweet put out by the Chinese embassy here in the USA glorifying forced sterilizations in Uighur women and how happy they are for no longer being "baby making factories". Then a couple weeks before that there was a tweet from the Pedophile Project (Lincoln) that tweeted out the lawyers names, phone numbers, home and work addresses. Nothing was done to them except they told to delete that tweet.

If everybody is held to the same standard then I agree but if not then I don't agree

The company reserves the right to do whatever they want with your account at any time they want and even change the terms that they want whenever they want. By the way, the embassy account got locked and the tweet was removed for violation. I know it may be difficult to understand the moderation process of very large sites, and I've been unhappy myself the numerous times I've had to report violations and been met with frustration but they have a right to do what they want and you agree to it when you make an account just like you do here.

Which is a good reason to not actually use Twitter.  Does Twitter actually serve an useful purpose?

Doesn't matter. There lots of businesses, services, and entities that some don't feel serve a useful purpose, but yet they exist, and people use it.

Yeah Project Veritas did that over and over. Finally they got the boot. That's what happens to repeat offenders. It's not like they didn't get any warnings.

We know they have leeway and use discretion. Sometimes people benefit from that and sometimes people don't. We don't always get to see who has been abusive and in what ways or how many times, but it's not as simple as saying two people made similar posts that violate the TOS so they both get the same "punishment".  I'm not sure why we would expect Twitter to work differently.

Project Veritas had a long history of violating Twitters TOS, and it caught up to them. It has caught up to several others recently too, and probably more in the days ahead if they can't change the way they use the site. The concept should not be unfamiliar, and probably other Twitter users should take heed if they want to keep using the site. If not, I believe I have seen posted here before, if we don't agree with the TOS, we are always free to start our own site and make our own TOS.

Let's put it this way. There used to be a very popular person on twitter, happy go lucky sort, loved their fans, very interactive with them. Of course that led to some really crazy people following them. By following them, I mean there were other sites dedicated to their every single movement. Stalker type stuff. They had some really disturbed type followers, the sort that would post 100s of times a day with violent messages threatening self-harm, harm to the person, disturbing images of dead bodies, mutilated animals etc if only they would pay attention to them. Reported them so many times it wasn't funny. It went on for YEARS. Drove the person off of twitter completely and eventually left social media entirely.

People often react with outrage when they find something they don't like on twitter not being attended to and react with outrage again when they find something they like being attended to. I could never understand why twitter never took threats against this person seriously but for whatever reason that's what they chose. That's what they reserve the right to do, and we have the right to go elsewhere.
