BIG BILL: COUNTY ESTIMATES $1.8 BILLION TO RAISE ROADS FOR 2045 SEA LEVEL RISE

https://keysweekly.com/42/big-bill-county-estimates-1-8-billion-to-raise-roads-for-2045-sea-level-rise/

Florida Keys may abandon some roads to sea rise rather than raise them

https://www.tampabay.com/news/environment/2019/12/06/florida-keys-may-abandon-some-roads-to-sea-rise-rather-than-raise-them/#:~:text=Environment-,Florida Keys may abandon some roads to sea rise rather,2025 could cost %2475 million.&text=Last month%2C the Keys asked,to address sea level rise.&text=Half of them are susceptible,in the next 20 years.

I'm kind of familiar with this.  When I built our house in the Keys, we added fill to the property to bring the elevation under the house (it's a stilt house) up to 3 feet above sea level.  I'm right on the water and the back of the house is 20 feet from the water, a canal.

Only thing that worries me are the hurricanes and the storm surge.  Last hurricane there was a 6+ foot storm surge with over 3 feet of water under the house.

Storm surge is still vastly underrated.

In 2008, Hurricane Ike was a Cat 2 'cane but had a Cat 4 storm surge.

The meteorology outfits hastened to make changes to their rating systems, as I understand.

How high above the water is the house? Three feet of water under the house sounds a bit concerning.

A picture of the back of the house taken several days after hurricane Irma, where there was 3 feet of water under the house.  The water (canal) is just to the right of the picture, 18 feet from the stairs  The concrete pad is at 3 feet elevation and the finished floor, upstairs, is about 13 feet elevation.  There was a lot of erosion as the water receded quickly.  Some of the soffit material blew out and more was missing on the sides.  The boats floated up slightly but were tied down well and didn't go anywhere.  Bits of insulation blew out of the attic and the screen on the porch was a mess.  I did a lot better than most.

Most of the houses around me are of similar construction.  Made just for this reason.

It must get scary when there is a bad storm. But in nice weather it’s paradise.
