Hi, please advise on the medical tests performed by the doctor before going to the visa interview.

I did some research and understand that visa can be denied if someone has a "communicable disease of public health significance"

I found the below URLS. Are they appropriate?

https://www.cdc.gov/immigrantrefugeehealth/laws-regs/hiv-ban-removal/fact-sheet.html

anything else? what would be an international concern from WHO? could not  find anything..

The FAQ page is more up-to-date: https://www.cdc.gov/immigrantrefugeehealth/exams/medical-examination-faqs.html

What are the communicable diseases of public health significance that would cause an applicant to fail a medical examination or be inadmissible?

Communicable diseases of public health significance include—

  • Tuberculosis
  • Syphilis
  • Gonorrhea
  • Hansen’s Disease (Leprosy)

And the following two disease categories–

  • Quarantinable diseases designated by any Presidential Executive Order. Current diseases include: cholera, diphtheria, infectious tuberculosis, plague, smallpox, yellow fever, viral hemorrhagic fevers, severe acute respiratory syndromes, and influenza caused by novel or re-emergent influenza (pandemic flu).
  • Events that are reportable as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) to the World Health Organization (WHO) under the International Health Regulations (IHR) of 2005 (currently polio, smallpox, SARS, influenza, and other public health emergencies of international concern.)

Some health-related waivers may be available for these diseases. For general information concerning the role that the CDC plays in the waiver process, you may visit our website. Additional information concerning Form I-601, the waiver application, and the requirements is located on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website.

I think what they check depends on where you are from, in my country they x-ray your lungs looking for signs of tuberculosis, they draw your blood for HIV test and syphilis (i think), and if you recently had body pierced / tattooed they also test you for hepatitis.

They check your skin/eyes and ask you to fill in some form.

You get couple of vaccine shots at exam or you can have them prior to exam.

If they find something suspicious doesn't automatically means you are banned from going to USA forever,  many things can be cured, they give you medications and you get retested again. Being HIV + is not grounds to deny your visa, as long as your partner knows and u are honest about it at medical exam.

HIV test not required and if done it requires your prior consent: https://www.cdc.gov/immigrantrefugeehealth/exams/ti/hiv-guidance-panel-civil.html

panel physicians and civil surgeons should

  • No longer test for HIV infection.
  • Put a line through the spaces for HIV test results on the DS 2053/2054 and I-693 forms, respectively, until those forms are amended.
  • Record HIV infection disclosed by an applicant as a Class B Other condition on the DS 2053/2054 and I-693, respectively.

If applicants who would benefit from HIV testing provide consent, panel physicians or civil surgeons should perform HIV testing consistent with the standards of testing in their countries.
