Getaway in New England

C. and I aren't taking a long trip for our honeymoon, preferring to save up and visit friends in England in the spring, but we are thinking of doing a two-or-three day get away before getting back to the grind.

We'd like to do something within reasonable, if long, driving distance of Connecticut, so we're thinking a summery New Englandy vacation might be fun. Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine... we're looking for somewhere peaceful, nature-y but not camping, and are pretty much indifferent to presence or absence of the seashore.

Any recommendations?

Every year since my mom was born, my whole family has gone up to Bretton Woods, NH in the White Mountains every summer. My great-grandmother even still works reception at the Mount Washington Hotel.

Camping, golf, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, etc. Tons of stuff to do in that area.

The hotel is somewhat pricey, but there are a lot of alternatives nearby as well:

Other choices might be the Berkshires, or maybe Kennebunkport?

100 % agree.. if you are outdoorsy, love to hike, bike, explore, catch some sun at the beach, shop in Bar Harbor, sail around a bit, eat lobster and have a FAB weekend!!!

6 hr drive from Waterbury..

I RECOMMEND HIGHLY!

But it's busy this time of year, so better get cracking on the reservation!

We just went to Acadia National Park (Maine) for our short Honeymoon. It's a great place to visit - hiking trails, beach, lakes, carriage rides, scenic drives and Bar Harbor. (lots of restaurant, shops and a wonderful movie theater with couches)

There are little cottages for rent on the Island - much better than B&B or just a room.

Don't come to Portland. You'll be overrun with all the other tourists. They suck. (Seriously.) Nice place to visit, better to stay out of town.

Acadia is beautiful, and well worth a visit. Also covered in tourists, but not like Portland where they're all crammed in a small space.

But if you do come to Maine, let me know and I'll buy you a beer ;)

ETA: We honeymooned in VT - I recommend the Cabot Cheese Factory!

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.

Another vote for there too. We nearly ended up getting married there -- it is so beautiful. Plus you get to stop at all the other places up the coast on the way and back. If you decide on Vermont, let me know and I'll point you to the right places. It's pretty sleepy, but maybe that's what you're looking for.
