We seem to be missing some thrilling reports...

I think VJ was down for a couple of days?

Anyway

Dave's adventures in cooking -

Instant pot ribs: very good.

Instant pot Mongolian Beef: not as good as sous vide version (tried this because I was short on time)

Low carb Pumpkin Cheesecake: pretty good (parents are coming for Thanksgiving, so I want to make sure any low-carb Thanksgiving food actually tastes good before giving it to them because I need to stick with my diet 🤣)

Mini-Dave's adventures -

Acquired Halloween costumes (mini-Batman, Captain Marvel, and a Jedi robe) and decorations; PRG said if she didn't know the adult costume sections in Party City and the Halloween store were for Halloween costumes, would have thought they were for something else 🤣.

Went to the Safari Park (formerly the Wild Animal Park) a couple weeks ago with neighbors. Have some cute pictures of mini-Dave with neighbor girl. Also took the Africa Tram (which my mom didn't want to wait in line for the last time we went, but definitely should have), so have cute pictures of baby giraffe, baby rhino, and various other animals in giant open spaces.

Picked mini-Dave up from daycare last week and seemed to be the end of a birthday party; no one told us, man (brought mini-Dave's cake and some party favors home; don't really know the birthday girl, but would have sent something with mini-Dave if I'd known it was her birthday)

Immigration adventures -

PRG learned Russian consulate was doing a few days in LA, so we can drive up to renew her passport instead of flying to Houston or DC; yay, man.

PRG is also studying citizenship questions since someone on VJ in Sandy Eggo from our month got an interview scheduled; has not claimed our president, VP, governor, senators, representative, the Speaker of the House, or the Chief Justice is Calvin Klien 🤣.

Howdy everyone!! I have been pretty busy in the other forums, but not on this one so much. And busy with life in general. I’d love to read your opinion on something that happened to me in school today.
Context: I work at a middle School. I teach Spanish, which is also my native language (this is relevant). My students and I were deciding on a Halloween theme, and we voted for one. We also talked about cultural appropriation, and being respectful and mindful of what we consider a costume. We had already moved on.

Then out of the blue, One of my students, who’s usually the “leader”, said my accent sounds like Gloria from Modern Family. I know Sophia Vergaras accent very well -I just didn’t know she was Gloria. So I just didn’t pay attention.
Then I looked her online and put 2 and 2 together. It’s common knowledge that everyone makes fun of her accent… I doubt my student knows that, but I just don’t know how to interpret it.
And yes, I do have an accent. But my English is pretty decent. Nobody has ever said anything about my accent before -at most, what I get is just “where are you from?” And that’s it. But the fact that she compared me with someone that is usually mocked didn’t sit well. Opinions?

Sophia Vergara

She's a Colombiana, si R ma'am?  Ex-Mrs.-T-B. always says that their dialects (in Spanish) are very distinctly identified, si man.  Argentinos, conversely, have dialects (in Spanish) that can sound almost like Italian, si man.  Ecuatorianos have several native dialects:  in Guayaquil and parts south, people drop their final consonants, si ma', whereas in Quito and parts north, people complete their words, si man.  It's very possible for Ecuatorianos to know almost exactly where their countrymen are from, even in such a small country, si man.

We have found that when any Spanish-speaker speaks English, certain vowel patterns are constant: long "e" sound for the English short "i" sound, and rarely achieving a schwa sound, hear man.  Of note, Ex-Mrs.-T-B. has continued her "drop the ends of words" when she speaks English -- and another Ecu wife (from Quito) completes her English words, si man.

All this is to suggest that you listen to yourself speak English, compare it to how Sophia Vergara speaks English, and see whether anything is similar, si R ma'am.

Maybe she was innocently thinking out loud, si R ma'am, or even meant it as a compliment, si R ma'am.  How many other Spanish actresses are there with whom to compare your English pronunciation, huh R ma'am?  Not many, right R ma'am?  And since when is ANY public figure praised or complimented online, huh R ma'am?  It's the critics who jump online to say anything negative, si and sigh man.

We would most certainly NOT take this event personally, no R ma'am.  If you can't let go of it, ask your student privately (and without a tone of blame) to elaborate on her observation, si R ma'am.  It might give you the chance to explain (in educational fashion) variations and consistent factors in how Spanish people speak English -- even citing some of our observations from this post, si R ma'am.

Thank you for your insight. I even said that Sofia Vergara is beautiful and my students said “so are you!!!” So now if I look at it that way, it might have been just an innocent observation. And quite frankly her accent sounds fantastic!
