I was wondering what WalMart do about healthcare, you tend to think of an elderly workforce and that minimum wage could be worth it just for Healthcare.

The bigger problem is their coverage after they retire imo.

Well I was thinking through to the positive side, that they could get a legit job with benefits for 10 years, they would have to work presumably full time until there late 60's.

So then they should be able to get Medicare and  a small pension, presumably the plan is that they will be living with the OP.

They have a couple of years to get more comfortable with the language.

I just know people in their late 50's who were looking for work and getting a job with benefits of any type seems tricky. And perhaps I am being negative but difficult to see things improving.

I did ask the question about whether they would be living with OP - I think that will probably end up being the deciding factor on whether the finances make sense or not.

Also mid 50s is not “old”. If they want to learn English they can probably do an immersion course and get conversational in a relatively short amount of time. Lots of free or low cost options for that here, Internet options while they are there (duolingo etc).  As to whether it’s too old for a job - depends what type of job and where. Most success will be jobs other people don’t want to do , which means they won’t be fun, though I’m not sure it’s ever really fun working minimum wage in your 50s and 60s.

If Walmart is anything like Target they will work the system to not have to pay their employees any benefits. When I moved here and had to take a job at Target as my first employment they tried to lure in people with the promise of $15/hr by 2020. Sounded good to many, but in reality the employees got less hours to make up for it, and Target made sure to keep people under 30/hrs on average a week, as 30/hrs or more would've required them to offer health care.

That's also something to take into consideration if the goal is to slave away for companies who are just out to screw you anyway. Do not expect them to pay for any kind of Healthcare.

It is very hard for someone with no skills to find a job that provided benefits. I think 32 hours/week is what is required by most companies to obtain benefits. As Scandi said most companies make sure you don't average that many hours so they don't have to pay the employer share of the benefits.

OP is looking at health insurance for the parents at a minimum until they turn 65 and supporting them for life.
