US passport after Naturalization

Hello VJ members,

Hope all is with you guys!

Need help from folks who have already applied for US passport after Naturalization. My understanding is that we would need to submit Original Naturalization certificate ,DS-11 form, Driving license (photocopy) color passportsize picture along with $110 dollars fees. If we need to know submit original Naturalization certificate, I am afraid they will lost it just like they have lost my I751 greencard and still they could not find it? Also, Why do we need to make photocopies of these supporting document if they have already asked us to bring original copies?

How do we have to pay $110 fees through pay check payable to "U.S. Department of State" right? And also would USPS accept passport size picture from lets say CVS/walgreen (if I chose to use their passport size picture services) or I should just stick with USPS passport size picture services? Which one serves better? USPS would charge $35 as passport acceptance fees, does that include passport picture or USPS will charge us extra fees for pictures?

Last, how long does it take to get US passport and original Naturalization certificate?

Thank you all for help and advise?

the reason u are sending new supporting documents for passport is to verify the ID of the natualization certificate/  the office doing the US passport has no idea of who you are / they have not seen your ID and the document could be stolen (ID theft is prominent in the US)

CVS and Walgreens are accepted for the passport photos

and no the $35 fee is to mail back the different forms which will come to u in separate mailings

they say to allow 8 weeks for all to be completed / could be faster (ours took 3) or slower with the covid issues and offices working with limited staff as many are sick

photo copy any originals before you send them out for your files  to protect yourself

and most of all Congratulations

Thank you for information. My concern is that USPS would messed it up with my original Naturalization certificate  just like they have already lost my I751 Greencard and still I am dealing with their pathetic service? For passport fees, did you submit payable check to Department of State worth of $110?How did you get the case number to check your passport status online? I am relocating  to another state in a month or 2.Is it okay, if I can file passport paperwork in current state and would like to receive my passport in another state since processing time takes 6 to 8 weeks or more?

If that concerns you the most ,  mail the application and documents thru UPS or Fed ex and include in your mailing , ( 2 self addressed / 3 if applying for the passport card  ) in your envelope to the address listed in the application instructions

but understand i have seen UPS and fed ex trucks stuck in snow banks or involved in accidents too

I didn't track it with case # / others will answer this but you will get a receipt for tracking your mailing from USPS , UPS or Fed ex to see delivery

I believe you have to be living in the county for 3 months before filing US passport so i would wait (my opinion only) and get the new state ID before mailing the application.   I say this as the post office is not to forward the return mail from old to new address for these important documents /they will be write that  on the mailing envelope

While you might be concerned, this is what is required. You must give them the original certificate and you must apply in person you cannot mail anything in.

I got a money order at USPS to pay the fees so I paid for everything using my debit card.

The passport tracking site uses regular biographic data DOB, your social and name so you don't need a tracking number. When they are returning your passport you get a tracking number. There's no tracking number for the return of the certificate.

I also got my photos at USPS. It was just easier for me to get everything done there.

You can’t just do a mail in for first passport application, it must be in person before an authorized passport acceptance agent.

Sorry,  i should have included we mailed it in from post office (main one has section for citizenship and the officer saw all papers before i sealed the envelope/ i thought all knew this)  i was just refering to the part about mailing and how to insure the documents were returned in good order

I just submitted passport application through USPS and to my surprise, USPS did not even give me tracking information of passport application package? All I got is receipt for $35 acceptance fees. Now I am freaking out that I should have expediated my application with extra bucks to get the tracking information for my passport package. USPS already lost my I751 Greencard last month and I hope that they wont messed it up with my passport application and original NC.

They won't give the tracking # for onward journey even if you paid expedite .there will be a 7-10 day from the time you applied in USPS to be able to track in the system . There is nothing I believe we can do in between to trace it .

My expedited passport application was received by the Passport Office on January 20. I received my new passport back via Priority Mail Express (I paid extra for this) on February 9.  I received my naturalization certificate back via regular first class mail on February 16.

When did you apply for US passport?

I have applied through On Feb 9,2021 and still nothing showed up on the DOS website. Probably due to unprecedented weather condition across the nation, it might take another week or so to show on the system!
