Covid delays affecting work permit

My husband and I filed more than 2 years ago to remove the condition on his green card. Instead of approving however, he was given an 18 month extension which expired a couple months ago. We were asked again for more documentation of our marriage, which we provided. 

 

The 18 month extension has now expired. I believe due to covid our application still has not been processed. His work permit has now expired and I am unable to provide for our family. We called to check the case status and the automated system stated that our application is being processed at the Nebraska center. 

 

What do we do? It isn't though any fault of ours that the application still hasn't been processed. Does anyone have any insights on whom we should contact to rectify the work permit status until our application is processed? Are there any extensions we can file for? Is anyone else experiencing these issues?

His card expires but his status doesn't. It is a misunderstanding. If employer requires proof of status, you can call in to ask for an infopass for a stamp.

Well go to uscis home page and register, there you will be able to write them and check your file status and correct any mistakes...

There is no ‘work permit’ and the proof of status initially issued has expired, not the permanent resident status itself.

They remain a permanent resident, and legal to work. 

 

There is no second extension letter issued. If you need proof of status,  make an infopass and get a stamp in passport or on an I-94.

You now have to call USCIS to make an appointment and they call you back to schedule one  - a convoluted process due to covid that is irritating but unfortunately necessary.

If the employer is trying to reverify  someone, they could potentially be falling foul of the law. Regardless, a valid state ID and unrestricted social security card is valid for I-9 verification purposes.
