Receiving Social Security Card and Number

Hi there I have just entered the US as a CR1 

and the Immigration Officer had mentioned  I need to contact Social Security to get my card/number? I was understanding that if you selected YES on the DS-260 your SSN would be automatically be processed and mailed to my US address  after a paid the USCIS Immigrant Fee.

 

is this correct I should I contact Social Security?

You should wait at least a month before contacting SSA. SSN thru DS-260 is off sometimes, especially in this pandemic.

You are correct.  If you don't receive it within a few months, then you could apply at SSA.

Ok So since I selected YES I should receive without having to apply but in the event it doesn’t arrive I should apply for 1?!

You SHOULD receive it automatically.  In the event it doesn't arrive, you will HAVE to apply for it in a few months.

Yes, my aunt’s SSN came like 4 weeks before the pandemic, and we ticked yes on her DS-260. If yours doesn’t come at all, you can make appointment at local SSA offices.

If you do not receive the SSN card in 3 weeks after arriving to the US, then you can contact your local SSA office.  They will know if your card is processing, or as in our case, if there is no record of a request/application.  If your case is not in the system, you can send in the SS-5 form to request the SSN card.

 

One office told us that we needed to send in my wife's passport, but another office said a copy of the bio page and CR1/IR1 visa page were sufficient.  In either case, the SSA office will call you to schedule an in-person appointment.  We sent in copies and had to show her passport at the appointment.
