If you use that acronym

What's that book of medical abbreviations -- Logan's?  If you find a copy, see if it's in there.  Probably too rare.

Oh, heavens, how true.  Probably some publications out there advocating this extra care, if not actual society guidelines, but people still cut corners.

Here's a readable anecdote about the importance of legible handwriting, which intersects some of what SB was saying:

It's all of those things. Poor handwriting, using incorrect abbreviations, people too tired so their brain doesn't translate the information correctly. I've observed doctors sometimes stick with the terminology they learned in medical school, even if that was 40 years ago and the entire nomenclature has changed.

Fortunately it is a big enough issue that it had to be addressed, and especially now that we use electronic records (and no paperwork if possible), you can set things up to make sure people can only use approved terms and information. Our current system has hard stops on almost everything if someone tries to get cute.

This one seems to discuss some precursors to the EMRs and valid terms:

Edited to add:  This author is great, if you read his other stuff.

Outlines what I was thinking exactly. Abbreviating blood to bld was always a pet peeve because you introduce uncertainty just to save 3 letters, probably not even 1 second. So many examples like that.

The EMR solves a lot of problems if set up correctly, but I am still fascinated by the way people try to force their old habits past the setup. I often hear "my computer wont let me do this, so I'm trying to ....", and my response is usually if the computer won't let you do it, don't do it. It was set up that way intentionally, and for a reason.

Honestly it's not an issue for me if an entity I'm not involved with want's to use acronyms or not. It is their decision and I do understand how they arrived at it. Acronyms do present challenges to non native speakers, and having a spouse who learned English as a second language, I'm fully aware of that fact and supportive of the need to address it.

What I'm not understanding is how some people arrived at their responses, although I have seem the same logic used enough time's over to have my suspicions.

My understanding is that the FU part can be deemed offensive

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I'll spell it out because I don't want to be racist.

You said "I just knew that deep down, these white supremacists were not the 'very fine people' that some were making them out to be."

And I said "YPICI" which everyone knows means "Your Post Is Completely Irrelevant".

And then with sarcasm, I said "Actually, I am very offended by SFUSD.  I can imagine it to mean a something very rude." because the whole topic of "San Francisco school official deems acronyms ‘racist’" is absolutely ludicrous, and they are still using an acronym for the school district!
