Didn't know acronyms are racist.

San Francisco school official deems acronyms ‘racist’ in axing arts department moniker

The San Francisco public school arts department — whose board decided last week to rename 44 schools that honored figures such as Abraham Lincoln and George Washington — have decided to take on their next target: acronyms.

The director of the district’s arts department told local ABC7 news that a decision has been made to change the name of their department, “VAPA,” which is short for visual and performing arts.

The new name will be SFUSD Arts Department.

“We are prioritizing antiracist arts instruction in our work,” the director, Sam Bass, told the network.

“The use of so many acronyms within the educational field often tends to alienate those who may not speak English to understand the acronym.”

It was not clear whether SFUSD was also considered a racist acronym.

I just knew that deep down, these white supremacists were not the 'very fine people' that some were making them out to be.

Not really sure what white supremacist came up with the acronym 'visual and performing arts', but I suppose in San Francisco anything is possible.

Well my big concern with ignoring white supremacists was not necessarily that they steal all our acronyms. There certainly are bigger issues that should have been addressed, and will be addressed. However I do understand people not wanting the association with symbology that has been misappropriated by these groups. They already ruined the use of 'OK'. They have stolen everything from cartoon characters to religious symbols in the past. It seems the penchant for racists to steal these icons from other groups has led some to being proactive about using symbols in general. Can't say I blame them.

My personal upside is I don't really like acronyms anyway. I only use them because I'm lazy, but I would be happier if the use was discouraged.

No one really likes acronyms, but isn't it human nature to increase efficiency?  I guess I am behind the times, is there a white supremacist group that has co-opted VAPA?  Regardless, the person driving this was not making the assertion that acronyms were being taken over by extremist groups, but that acronyms in general were racist in some way.

San Francisco is a hot bed of White Supremacy hence the need for action.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I believe the article explains why they feel that to be the case. However they did cite the work "White Supremacy Culture" to support their reasoning.

Like saying "POS!" when someone has Platypnea-Orthodeoxia Syndrome.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Isn't that a violation of the TOS to repeat here? It really should be removed, because there is one that can no longer be used, that we now have to use BSc for when speaking about Bachelor of Science degrees because we don't want to give the impression that we're talking about a load of garbage with a very vulgar acronym. So if we have to use BSc to be careful not to violate the TOS (a perfectly acceptable acronym), we should at least be consistent.

I am more concerned with medications and stuff. They are all similar anyway, and people are prone to misreading at the end of 12 hour night shifts. Just write the name out. It makes a big difference when you mix up morphine sulfate with magnesium sulfate. The consequences are not worth saving 2 seconds for.

If you use that acronym to save time, please be sure to specify Platypnea-Orthodeoxia Syndrome afterwards to avoid confusion. :)
