Exclusive: Dozens of former Bush officials leave Republican Party, calling it 'Trump cult'

(Reuters) - Dozens of Republicans in former President George W. Bush’s administration are leaving the party, dismayed by a failure of many elected Republicans to disown Donald Trump after his false claims of election fraud sparked a deadly storming of the U.S. Capitol last month.

These officials, some who served in the highest echelons of the Bush administration, said they had hoped that a Trump defeat would lead party leaders to move on from the former president and denounce his baseless claims that the November presidential election was stolen.

Some (most, all) shouldn't let the door hit them in the hindquarters on their way out.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I'm not sure you want to be chasing voters away given what happened this election. I'm sure they'll all be back on red by 2024 though.

This is a very good point. The Democrats are, for better or worse, a big tent party which of course makes it difficult to manage. Sometimes the tent needs to stretch a little more to keep in a Joe Manchin or a Kristen Synema, but it expands outwards where needed. Dialogue about points of disagreement are good for a party, heterodoxy is good for a party. That's not to say it works all the time or even most of the time in the Democratic Party. But it seems odd to me too that a party that just lost an election by 7 million votes would want to expel people from their party instead of asking themselves: why did we lose where we lost? Not just the battleground states, but every state they lost in. Some are easy answers, some not so easy.

Yeah, I thought so too. When the GOP just had the best turnout they have ever had and still lose by millions, and the base is significantly older than the other side and younger voters are significantly more likely to vote Dem, I would think they would be looking at attracting new voters, not repelling existing ones.

It's not like they don't know all that either. Those were the talking points prior to 2016. I recall Lindsey Graham saying "were not generating enough angry white guys to stay in business in the long term". Seems like they decided to double down with Trump for the short term. I don't think that is sustainable.

All if you want to claim that you are part of a party then you should vote for the front runner. If you didn't vote for the head of the party then don't claim you are part of the party.

Let's say your party's front runner eats babies for dinner. Now you really don't think it's cool to eat babies for dinner in fact you don't think they stand for anything your party that you love is about. Still gonna vote for them, huh?

Guess we all gotta be sheep these days...

There was a reason why many Democrats voted for Reagan.

So Republicans who sat out 2008 because they didn't like McCain and then voted for Romney aren't Republican? Or did they get re-baptized in 2012? Or maybe in the 2010 midterms?
