Thank you all so much for responding! It was nice for two reasons. A i know its not just me and that you have have the same issues. B Our American partners didn't get upset and joined in too. I have always injoyed my time in the states when i have been down on a visit and everyone is very nice. But there is one thing that i found kind of odd. People actually go out in public in their fuzzy slippers....lol I found this most amusing!

We have proven thta yes everyone can get get along quit well and have a good time together  :

HILARIOUS Thread!

I still remember the first time I went to visit my husband and I stood in the front porch trying to figure out where I put my shoes. Also, I never knew they didn't eat fries and gravy in the US. My husband asked me about it the last time he came to visit (a guy on his flight told him about it) and it is now his favourite thing to order.

Ramos - what lovely things to say. You remind me of my husband - very thoughtful. My husband bought me my kettle from Meijers (sp?) as microwaving water was foreign to me. Hope your journey goes smooth.

I was dying and asked where the washroom was at a hotel, the woman looked at me and told me the dryer wasn't working. I stood there in disbelief, what do I care if the hand dryer's not working, Jim finally piped in "RESTROOM"

There's another thread on here, cultural differences I think....it's good too.

When she says "Thank you", don't ever say "Uh huh." The response is "You're welcome."

Thank you. wink.gif

OMG! That totally drives me up the wall!

I mean, how many more syllables is it to say "Thank you" than it is to say "uh huh"!

oh, I have to chime in here again - my husband does the uh huh instead of please or thank you - although he is getting better about it - and it drives me nuts!

If you are looking for a kettle, try the Melitta Express Kettle - they carry it at Target and places like that or you can order it on line. Basically, it is a base that is plugged into the wall, but then the kettle itself is cordless. It sits on the base and when you push down the lever it boils, then stops when the water is boiled so you don't have to worry about it boiling dry. I love mine (it replaced the garage sale cordless kettle when that one died). The price is reasonable too.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

That way you don't accidently turn a burner on underneath it, very very smelly.

Growing up in Canada, spending my last three teenage years in Texas, and then coming back to Canada have thoroughly confused my brain on the whole restroom/washroom/bathroom thing. I use them all interchangeably now and get odd looks no matter which country I'm in.

I think maybe one day I'll start calling it the loo and be done with it :D

GRAVY!

I said it in another thread, and I'll say it again now: gravy is that tasty brown sauce that you have with potatoes: mashed, french fried, or poutine'd. Gravy should NOT look like CONGEALED LARD! *vomit*

The first time I was offered 'sausage gravy' I nearly lost what breakfast I'd already eaten. Gravy may be 99% fat but at least brown gravy doesn't actually LOOK like it. :ranting:

Later on, I saw a KFC commercial featuring a saucepan of that White Lard O' Doom being SUCKED UP IN A STRAW. I had to put my plate down and stop eating. I learned not to ask for gravy with my fries at restaurants; what I don't get is why the brown gravy + mashed potatoes --> brown gravy + fries is so hard a leap to make?

I'm actually not a poutine purist; I prefer the wimpy version that is mixed grated cheese sprinkled on fries cooked until crisp, then topped with gravy so that the cheese melts and each fry is coated in melted stringy cheese and salty gravy. Oh heaven! Cheese curds creep me out; they squeak between the teeth like rubber mice.

I've laughed so many times this thread!

My poor fiance was so shocked by milk in bags that he kept talking about it for a week after.

I brought my fiance up short one day while he was making fun of 'washroom'. I pointed out that one does not 'rest' in a 'restroom' and that not all 'bathrooms' have 'bathtubs' in them, but I sure as hell hope that everyone 'washes' when finished in the 'washroom'!!
