Status Termination date on driver permit for conditional Green Card Holder

We live in New York State.  My wife had a non driver state ID (a REAL ID) which expired last year.  She got this before her green card, based on her EAD.

Last August she received her 2 Year Green Card.  A few days ago she got her driver permit.

The temp Real ID permit (waiting for Permit Card in mail) says Status Terminates on her birthdate, 2025.

Firstly, I thought her status doesn’t end, even if her green card expires.

Secondly, where did they come up with this just under 5 year date on her birthday?  If anything, I figured they would make it expire when her 2-year green card expires?

Can anyone explain what this is?  The permit is supposed to be good for 5 years so I’ll have to wait and see the expiration date on the actual card when we get it.

Also, on a second note, does anyone know how New York works with Driver’s Licenses?  I know they don’t accept extension letters.  So if she gets a license before this card expires, will the license expire when the 2 year card does, or is it for a longer term.

And I assume if she doesn’t get the license before it expires, then she would have to wait for the 10 year green card to get it (or get an i551 stamp, if even possible).

Thank you for any input.

In some states, it will have validity as same as her green card. It is depended on the State’s law.

In TX, your card will have validity of 5 years even if the card is 2 years.

NancyNguyen, thank you I understand that.  I haven't found anything online about validity of the license for a green card holder so I'm hoping someone has experience with it.

JeanneAdil, thanks for the answer however this is not the permit expiration date.  It is a status termination date.  And that date is not the last day of the month.  It's her actual birth date.

Thank you.

That's when her driver's license expire. In NY your driver's license will be valid for a max of 5 years (it will actually expire on the birthday before it completes 5 years)

I just transferred my driver's license from CT to NY and have the same thing (status expiration on 10/25/2025.). And I'm also a conditional resident, just got my GC last November.

For this I assume you mean permit, she doesn't have a License.  So status termination must refer to the expiration of the permit, not her immigration status,  and it's less than 5 years because they use her birthday and not actually 5 years (luckily her birthday is not at the beginning of the year).

So I'm hoping if she gets a license before her green card expires, it will also be valid for 5 years and she will hopefully have a 10 year card before needing to renew the license.  Will have to wait and see and hope things time out nicely.

Thank you for the information.

Her driver's license will expire the same date it shows on her permit, her birthday in 2025.

Ahh ok got it now.  Well hopefully will be ok then since she should have her 10 year green card before the license expires.

So (although we don't plan it) do you know if she would be able to get her license after her 2 year card expires, since the permit is still valid?

Thank you again.

I don't think they are going to ask for all the documents again. But she should be fine. She can use the extension letter from ROC.

I don't believe New York accepts extension letters, so I am going to do my best to make sure she gets the license before the green card expires, to be safe.

2 year green card holder here.
Had a license in TX, validity was 8 years.

Moved to Mississippi, lady gave me 1 year from the day I made the license, 4 months short of my GC expiration explaining I have to contact USCIS because she has to go to lunch now.
Good ol’ US and A.
