Depends on the evidence.  My biggest beef is that Fauci said not to wear a mask at first.  It was obviously common sense to wear a mask back in January/February 2020 as it is now.  You say he simply changed his opinion based on evidence, I would think a learned 79 year old career epidemiologist would already have the evidence for that so when he changed his tune later, it just seemed like spin when he tried to justify it.  Whatever.

The evidence was science.

I didn't say he changed his opinion. I said he changed his recommendation.

You go to your doctor. He tells you that you're healthy and you're doing fine, don't change a thing. The next visit, he says tests have come back and you have diabetes, so you need to take insulin. You don't respond with "You're an idiot doctor, last time I was here you said I didn't have to do anything. Why are you changing your opinion?"

You can sit there and say whatever and assume what you would do in his position. The truth is this virus is novel (new) for a reason. We had a lot that we didn't know about back then. Scientists need to look at and test theories and see evidence before making guidance. That is little understood by people that want answers NOW.  It was no brainer to me that masks would be a thing, and that's why I started sourcing materials early. But I am not a scientist, a scientist isn't going on a gut feeling. They have to weigh pros and cons. For instance I think we could all tell that we simply did not have enough supply. There wasn't enough for medical staff, front line workers, and the average person. We still don't. This is compared to other countries that actively provide each citizen a supply of good masks every week. The scientist has to determine does the mask work against this particular virus, how will it work, what is the best options and guidance for the general public? How do we ask a society to care enough about each other to mask up that is clearly not in our hardwired culture? What happens during material shortages? The questions go on and on and on. I can probably also point out other reasons why there was clearly a dispute going on about masks instead of an outright honest consensus, but I have a feeling no one wants to hear that answer.

Except there were no masks. If we had unlimited amounts, the recommendation would have probably been different.

I mean normally the guidelines don't say wear a surgical mask for a week either, but we are still doing that. Nobody thinks it's a good idea. If you call the manufacturer, they say we don't recommend reuse and recommend you order more. Then we order more and they are backordered till the end of time and don't even have our regular standing order.

It is what it is, and we will end up back to the fact that a separate issue from how we responded is that we were not prepared for something of this magnitude to ever happen, and perhaps we should have been. People who were, well N95 masks were cheap throwaway items a couple of years ago. I used to buy them in the store once in a while in case I needed them, and just because they were so cheap. Unfortunately I only stocked up for a few days, not a year.

Except that Dr. Fauci said he didn't recommend wearing masks initially due to the potential lack of PPE, not because of the science.  Apparently he was playing with people's lives.

I recall several here who claimed it was a scam or fake

My dad's good friend would argue with him every week on the phone how they knew what they were doing and it was all okay. They ardently believed it was all a hoax, it was just like a cold, or made up. They didn't believe in wearing masks or getting a vaccine. They'd send over memes and jokes about how masks don't work and a ton of other completely fake news articles. Now their wife is dead. Virus killed her in a couple days.

Difficult story and I'm sorry, but it's hard for me to feel sympathetic. It's the choice they made, and the price they have paid for foolishness is a heavy one. I hope that no one here that also thinks the same way will never have to pay that same price.

Just... it's repeated so many times now the grief isn't so much sadness as it is numbness to me.

I will say this. It doesn't matter which administration didn't prepare for a pandemic (don't get me wrong it's a contributing factor did not start with Obama and will not end with it either), but it does matter what an administration does once one happens. Think we've talked about that in threads before. Once again a heavy price is paid for foolishness. What will this administration do? Could we mass produce PPE and other supplies? Could we send masks to every citizen like other countries? We used to be a country of bold, big ideas. Doesn't seem that way anymore. We're too busy arguing about wearing a mask like babies over the graves of 400,000+ bodies.

I seem to remember many in this country taking to making their own face coverings once the experts finally decided to recommend them.  It seems a lot of folks are looking toward DC for all the answers.  Should an administration stockpile?  Sure, but how much is enough, and what do we do about spoilage or obsolescence?  One might argue that surgical masks do not go bad, but everything deteriorates over time.  I know we made up a few cloth coverings that we could wash and re-use, then got some of the surgical or KF94s where we could.

Not addressing a problem would be the fault of the administration that first failed to do so and also every subsequent administration that neglected to remedy the problem. The Obama administration had two terms to address it and didn't so I would say a worse job overall on that issue.
