It wasn't great.

On the most recent stop of the Fauci Unplugged Tour, the infectious disease expert detailed to The New York Times what it was like dealing with a colossal idiot who wanted doctors to look into injecting household cleaners into COVID-19 patients. According to Fauci, he first realized things were going off the rails during “the rapid escalation of cases in the northeastern part of the country.” He would try to explain just how bad things were and Trump, probably looking up from his phone where he was typing out incomprehensible tweets about the coronavirus being a Democratic hoax, would respond “Well, it’s not that bad, right?” To which Fauci, as though he was speaking to a small child would have to say “Yes, it is that bad,” which of course didn’t make a difference anyway because Trump barely listened to him or anyone else telling him anything he didn’t want to hear. Sayeth Fauci:

…the other thing that made me really concerned was, it was clear that he was getting input from people who were calling him up, I don’t know who, people he knew from business, saying, “Hey, I heard about this drug, isn’t it great?” or, “Boy, this convalescent plasma is really phenomenal.” And I would try to, you know, calmly explain that you find out if something works by doing an appropriate clinical trial; you get the information, you give it a peer review. And he’d say, “Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, this stuff really works.”

He would take just as seriously their opinion—based on no data, just anecdote—that something might really be important. It wasn’t just hydroxychloroquine, it was a variety of alternative-medicine-type approaches. It was always, “A guy called me up, a friend of mine from blah, blah, blah.” That’s when my anxiety started to escalate.

People like Fauci aren't hard to read, just remind him that Trump was elected President and not him and that should get him talking to himself for the rest of the day. If he thought he was the better person to sit in the big boy seat he had an option of running for President. But instead he opted to do nothing but stand behind the big boy making gestures "like a moron". 🤔

Always love the self-important unelected career bureaucrats.

Couldn't this apply to any criticism of President Biden then? Should the reply to every time you criticize Biden be "if you thought you were the better person to sit in the big boy seat, you had an option of running for President. But instead you opted to do nothing but post commentary on an internet forum."

Fauci actually opted to do his job. His job was not to be president, that is a fallacious argument. Fauci's job was (and is) director of the national institute for allergy and infectious disease. He is there for his expertise in that area and he did what he was supposed to do. The issue is not really even about Fauci. A president will never know as much about a specific body of knowledge as an expert in the field. For some reason Trump thought he knew best, and he made poor decisions because of it. Much of the economic and human loss caused by the pandemic comes back to that one single fact.

So all the interviews where Fauci said the Trump Administration followed everything he and his team recommended was a lie?

Serious question, mind linking to one of those interviews? I don't think I ever heard him say the Trump admin was following his recommendations, but I could be wrong.

Here is one.

Dr. Anthony Fauci says President Donald Trump listened to his initial recommendations to shut down the United States in an effort to slow spread of the coronavirus and that he isn’t being forced or asked to explain to the media that Trump had listened to his expert opinion then.

“The first and only time that Dr. [Deborah] Birx and I went in and formally made a recommendation to the president to actually have a shutdown in the sense of strong mitigation, we discussed it,” Fauci, 79, said. “Obviously there would be concerns by some, and in fact, that might have some negative consequences. Nonetheless, the president listened to the recommendation.”

Fauci, the nation’s leading expert on infectious disease, also said that Trump listened to him and Dr. Birx, the president’s coronavirus task force coordinator, when they recommended extending the U.S. shutdown another 30 days through the end of April.

A reporter asked if Fauci was explaining himself on his own volition.

“Everything I do is voluntary. Please, don’t even imply that,” Fauci replied.

The topic actually addresses that specific point, but to summarize, it was the times the Trump administration did not follow the science and recommendations and went with inanely stupid ideas put forth by (for example) pillow salesmen, supplement pushers or a radiologist with little knowledge of virology. They spent too much time chasing magic beans and people paid for that, many with their livelihoods, and some with their lives.

So was Dr. Fauci the only person that should have been listened to?  I see travel bans are now in vogue, interesting how that was not one of Fauci's recommendations.

No but there certainly was an issue with where some of the input was coming from, and the ability to discern the validity of clinical information vs junk science. It's not like we haven't discussed this before.

I think I went into the detail behind where something like HCQ might help in very specific situations, and also why it wouldn't be effective overall and certainly shouldn't be getting any push as a treatment. I think that was with VOR, who had some anecdotal evidence of it working even though we had no clinical evidence ever that it would help most people. If HCQ was used appropriately, it may have legitimately been able to help 25-50 people recover. If the president had instead focused more on mask wearing , hand washing and social distancing, thousands more people might still be alive. That was the price of getting side tracked with bogus science.

Remind me, didn't Dr. Fauci initially say we shouldn't be wearing masks?  I know I ignored his sage advice back then.  Regardless, there were a lot of folks that were providing input, and considering the situation, there was a need for it.  Therapeutics were needed, and there were a lot of medical folks throwing around a lot of ideas including HCQ.  I am still wondering when the science experts were talking about boosting ones immune systems in a way to help.  Also, where are all the studies that show why one person might have serious effects and others not so bad?  Was it all genetic, or was it something else.

He did early on. We have been over that too. The problem is that when the science showed aerosolized spread was possible and the new guidelines recommended mask use, many didn't listen.

Real Trump supporters don’t wear masks.
