Question for Canadians - with K1 approved recently

Has anyone gotten their K1 visa approved in the past few months and were able to drive into the US by car? Due to the Canada-US border being closed by land, were you still able to cross with just the Visa approval?

We are at the packet 3 stage and once approved I will be going from Montreal to Florida but would obviously want to take my car with me.

Canadian regional forum is a better place for this type of question.

Good day,

I had my K-1 visa approved in December and I plan on moving in March. I called the US border customs at the site where I plan on crossing (Sault Ste. Marie) and they said that there was no current issues in crossing with a K-1 visa. This was prior to the recent changes on the US side though so I plan on calling again in a couple of weeks to make sure that this is still the case.

Thanks! That's good to know.

Can you keep me updated if it changes?

I'm working on packet 3 now and ideally only want to do my interview in March but since my original NOA2 expired in June, I feel like I should do it soon. (I only ended up getting packet 3 in November but then I was away for a month). I'm assuming the NOA2 was automatically extended.

I'm not sure of your original question, but when you end up sending in the P3 checklist (idk why it's taking you long), Montreal has been the one assigning interview dates now because of Covid.

And they stopped giving out interviews late November/December, so now idk when you'll even hear from them after sending it in.

There is a Canadian FB group for k1s and cr1s if you'd like to join as well, just search 'canadian cr1, k1' in the groups and it should come up.

I received the packet 3 sometime at the end of November while I was away. I only returned 2 weeks ago. We put off sending it in because we were considering changing to the CR1.

Now we're a little worried though. The NOA2 had an expiration date of June 20, 2020 but packet 3 didn't come until Nov 2020. I heard the NOA2 can only he extended up to a year. So what would happen of we can't get an interview date before then?

Doing CR1 is just going to start you all over from the beginning and adds more of a wait, I don't think you're gonna wanna do that when you are so close to the interview.

I think normally yes, it is a year, but with covid, they may be extending it, since it's taking forever for some people. You could email Montreal asking about it, but I don't have a for sure answer about that.

The noa2 would have been automatically extended until you can book an interview.  Normally you should have the interview booked by the time the noa2 expires. (Note you don’t have to have the interview, just have booked it)

Thanks! Glad to hear that. NOA2 expired in June but packet 3 only came in November cause of Covid delays. So I guess as long as I submit packet 3, it's not my fault if they don't schedule me for an interview any time soon.

They don’t schedule you. As a K1 you have to schedule yourself. Do it ASAP. Submit packet 3 before the 4 months are up.

I heard that due to the backlog, Montreal was assigning appointments for K1 but they apparently stopped in late November.

Packet 3 will be sent tonight or tomorrow.

My 4 months were over a long time ago...June 2020. But I heard they push it out a year if necessary. So hopefully I'll get it done in time.
