NAACP stands by fired radio host

St. Louis NAACP leaders said this morning that KTRS radio overreacted by firing host David Lenihan over a remark about U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

"This is an event that the press has blown out of proportion," said NAACP chapter president Harold Crumpton.

Seated next to him at news conference this morning was the organization's newest members:

Lenihan and his wife, Karen.

"He doesn't even say those words," she said. "We're just trying to find a way to make a positive out of this."

NAACP member Sam Moore said some people might find it strange that the organization had come to the rescue of a talk-show host who used the word "#######" while talking about Rice.

"We're gonna take some hits," he said. "People are going to wonder why we are sticking up for my new found friend here. But I am in the forgiving business."

Said Lenihan: "One of the things I found truly amazing was the support these gentlemen have given me

#######? this guy talking about nfl commisioner job was talking about condie being a good canidate and said" this would be a big #######." "big #######, or i am so sorry for saying that" etc...

naacp use to not like this type of bs, i guess they are desperate for members or publicity

you know, i don't listen to the guy, so i have no clue if he would have meant that or not, but the point is... even rice said she doesn't give a ####### that he said it. she accepted the apology he gave. It's a pretty strong argument if the naacp is standing up for him as well!

and for those who haven't followed.. he says that he meant to say "coup"

sorry, i should have written that...i think the naacp is looking for media attention in the area. ..in st louis, other minority support groups have taken the lead and the naacp has fallen behaind..i think the gentleman saying it first then a laugh and then again with a big apology upset allot of folks..

it was an honest mistake but he is still a chopf##k.. trying to milk this..the next day after this on the howard stern show ...then keith olbermann..etc

I haven't followed the story that much. I had no clue who the guy was before all this happened. I do agree that the NAACP is being very forgiving about this... it's weird. I didn't know he laughed about it and then appeared on the other shows. Nice.

He didn't laugh about it.. It was a completely honest mistake, he was flabergasted as soon as it slipped out, and he tried to correct it. I've heard the clip many times.

Bravo to the NAACP for standing by him.

People make mistakes. I am glad that the NAACP is standing by the guy and being rational about this instead of trying to crucify him as a "racist". I hope he gets another radio job soon. If I was on the radio and people listened to every word I said, I would be cleaning out my desk by thursday.
