Why do Unions continue to support Dems?

Laid-off Keystone XL worker says decision to cancel pipeline ‘is going to hurt a lot of people’

In his first day in office, President Joe Biden signed an executive order to halt the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline, which was meant to transport Canadian crude oil to the U.S., citing the climate-change crisis as the reason.

The move swiftly eliminated the estimated 11,000 U.S. jobs – including 8,000 union jobs – the project would have sustained in 2021.

Neal Crabtree, a welding foreman who began working on pipeline construction as an apprentice in 1997, was dismayed when he heard the news.

"This is not a time to be making political statements. We need to be finding ways to put more Americans back to work, not the other way around," he said in an interview with Fox News.

Isn't this one of the things Biden campaigned on? Whether we agree or not, did anyone actually not see it coming?

he also said he wasn't going to ban fracking.  so when he talks out of both sides of his mouth, he is going to get someone to hear what they want to hear.....

That is kind of my point, yes, he campaigned on it and yet many of the Unions still support him.

Biden campaigned on not issueing any more permits for fracking on federal land, and they haven't so far. A president doesn't actually have the authority to ban fracking nationwide so there is no reason to make any promise to do that. I expect his overall policy will be to start to transition away from fossil fuels over time.

Many unions are not involved with the Keystone XL pipeline. Do you think any of the Keystone XL workers voted for Biden?

I would expect many of the rank and file did not vote for Old Joe, but their Union endorsed him.

“In revoking this permit, the Biden Administration has chosen to listen to the voices of fringe activists instead of union members and the American consumer on Day 1,” Mark McManus, president of the UA, said on Monday. “Let me be very clear: When built with union labor by the men and women of the United Association, pipelines like Keystone XL remain the safest and most efficient modes of energy transportation in the world. Sadly, the Biden Administration has now put thousands of union workers out of work. For the average American family, it means energy costs will go up and communities will no longer see the local investments that come with pipeline construction.”

McManus’s prediction about the impact that killing the pipeline will have is spot on. So, this begs the question: Why did McManus and the UA endorse Joe Biden for president last summer? In fact, not only did they endorse him, Biden’s so-called record of standing with unions and creating jobs was given as the main reason for their endorsement.

I wonder if it had anything to do with Biden's opponent. Like me, a lot of people weren't all that happy about Biden as the Democratic nominee, but apparently the guy on the other side was a complete train wreck.

Yeah, for some reason most or many Unions tend to gravitate toward the Dems all the time regardless of the opponent.  Not really sure why, but I highly doubt this Union were doing it just because of Trump.

I never said it was just because of Trump. There are some people, maybe many people, who's support trends along party lines no matter what the candidates values, acumen, experience or agenda is. Unions as entities are focused on a small number of major issues and tend to fall in that group. Union members do not. What is important to one individual union member is not going to be the same as the next.

Of course there are also many who don't do that. It's worth recognizing that many people in the group that was willing to give Trump a chance as an outsider in 2016 ended up in the group that said it's time to get him out of there in 2020.

I did see 70,000 have already lost their jobs with no doubt many more to come.

I'm thankful you didn't round to the nearest billion this time.

Probably not so funny if you are the one who lost your job.

This just doesn't make any sense to me.  This oil will end up going somewhere, probably to China,  where pollution regulations are much more lax than in the US.
