Just to add, some of those hand signs that are benign to us are actually considered offensive in other cultures.

I have seen this discussed over the years and a recent example from the BBC, I came to the conclusion you can never keep up, there are so many things that can be misappropriated wilfully or otherwise.

Perhaps like the word filter, banning slang for cigarettes is amusing to me from an English speaker perspective, I can see why it was done, and I think I have seen a few others. On the Emoji side I am not sure how to differentiate between V for Victory and the other way around.

Maybe go with the standard produced by the system and let them worry about it.

A quick internet search indicates the OK hand signal may be considered offensive in Greece, Spain, Brazil and Turkey, and also more recently has been co-opted as a symbol used by white supremacist groups.

It might actually be a big job to tackle. The thumbs up sign, for example, is apparently the equivalent of the middle finger in some cultures. I feel like if we spent enough time looking, they all might be offensive somewhere.

Maybe just go back to the face emoticons? Although I'm not too sure about that one with the tongue sticking out.
