Zen Chill Out Lounge...Ready, set, relax

This is smart.  So tired of blowing the driveway and patio off because they're coated.  Add the leaves that love to blow up onto the front step...

 

This spring has been windier than usual in Houston, too.  I messaged my mom and said I feel like I'm back home on the Prairies!  Wind and giant skeeters. 

 

How do y'all manage the pools and the skeeters?  We don't even have a pool but the skeeters will attack in droves.  We have one side of fence to replace and then we're looking at a pollinator friendly mosquito misting system.  Still though...bloody pests!

The city sprays for the skeetos and that sends them to the backyard in droves. For the most part they aren't too bad until dusk, the pool itself doesn't increase the population thanks to the chemicals and stuff, but at night we stay under water more then during the day. I have a few of those area repel things to try this year.

We do find the Thermacell ones do work pretty well. If we’re working in the garage, I park em at the door threshold. Keeps em away for the most part.

A man from Texas was spending his summer vacation in the Vermont hills.  In the middle of his first night, four chickens roosting in a tree outside his window were disturbed by a cat and flew into his room.  Half asleep, the guest batted wildly with a pillow until the fowls found their way out.  Next morning, he declared enthusiastically, "Had a swell sleep.  Think I'll spend all my vacations here.  Saw only four mosquitoes all night, and they was just little ones."

Come to the bush in the great white north...not only do you get giant pterodactyl skeeters, you get horse and deer flies.  The difference is, you get none of that for about 6mo...tradeoff though is -40 and a snow shovel!

If skeeters aren't mosquitos forgive me. I haven't actually lived in the States yet and I'm only on VJ to get acclimated to the culture....

When my husband (then fiance) would come up to visit in the summer. He was shocked how much our skeeters hurt and how big they were. The worse part as I lived in the bush, so sandflies, no see ems, and the skeeters were lots of fun. But like you said they don't last long. 

 

We get deer flies and horse flies here. Not many but they do come around.

"Skeeters" are mosquitos and "skeeter eaters" are mosquito hawks. This is something you'd only know if you grew up in the Southern US, so don't feel bad. 🤣

 

I'm looking forward to summer here because we get fireflies, one of the few bugs that actually do add ambience and relaxation!

We grew up in Iowa (to translate, much like a sub-Arctic Canada, eh), and if we NEVER see another snowflake, we won't care!

I have some other choice description for them, but unfortunately those words are not allowed on the forum.

I only care for the snow when it's chinooking in the Canadian Rockies and we're doing something fun like tubing at Norquay.  My immigration journey "gifted" me an unanticipated, extra winter that I was none to pleased about because conditions were not conducive to tubing and I was stuck shoveling.

Like almost everyone else in Florida that has a pool, we have a screen enclosure.  The entire pool and surrounding patio area, approx 40x60 ft, is enclosed.  No skeeters and no leaves or anything else annoying except for a few spiders and an occasional snake.
