Hi,

I know a woman who's 4'7 feet tall (140 cm) and she's worried about going to the medical exam at the consulate because she's worried the doctors might disqualify her because of her height. Her height technically puts her in the dwarf category but she doesn't look like one because she's proportionate. She has never received medical treatment for her height such as growth hormone injections or limb lengthening surgery.

Does anyone know if a short height like that is seen as likely to make her a public health charge or disqualify her as handicapped?

She's going for an immigrant visa. Answers appreciated.

80% of all worries are needless.......this is definitely one of them.  Height is not an issue.

Height is definitely not an issue when it comes to the medical screening.

She's medically classified as a dwarf, proportionate but still a dwarf. I'll tell her not to worry about this then. Thanks for the reply.

Dwarfism is a genetic disorder. There is no such thing as medically classification of dwarfism by height.

She told me there's a cut off height, I remember it is less than 4'10(148 cm). She was diagnosed with a form of dwarfism but they didn't do anything to her, no grown hormone injections or limb lengthening surgery. Anyway, I told her not to worry.

The medical exam is not at the embassy/consulate, it will be done by one of the physicians approved by the embassy/consulate in the country where the interview will be done, normally in the same city but larger countries have multiple doctors on their list.  Information on how to schedule the medical will come with the visa interview date and related instructions.  No worries about height!  My children had their medicals for US immigration visas when they were very young and small, less than 4' 7", and they all passed with no problems.  The physician will be looking for overall health, vaccination/inoculation records, chest X-ray, etc. of the beneficiary.  The most common medical issues we see here on VJ are with TB, drug addiction, and mental health problems.  Good luck!

That's good to hear. This woman I know is 25 years old and 4'7 feet tall so she's not a child like your children were. That's why she's worried about this because that's her adult height. I told her what you wrote :) thanks.

I'm pretty sure most disabilities (and I don't even think she's disabled) are not an issue for the medical. There's nothing to worry about. Basically, if she doesn't have an infectious disease, addiction issues and she's not a danger to herself and others, she'll be OK, as long as she has the necessary vaccinations.

I wasn’t even measured at the medical. I was asked my height (I’m just under 5 feet tall). The doctor eyeballed my height but didn’t even check that what I had stated on the form was correct. The purpose of the medical is to establish whether the immigrant has conditions that could pose a risk to the general public health here. So they check for TB, STDs, potential harmful mental health issues, alcohol and drug abuse. Disabilities are not an issue. I know someone who completed the medical in a wheelchair, he couldn’t walk at all. No problem.

It’s not a test to join the Olympic team. It’s to protect the population here from contagious disease and people who could be dangerous.

Timeline in brief:

Married: September 27, 2014

I-130 filed: February 5, 2016

NOA1: February 8, 2016 Nebraska

NOA2: July 21, 2016

Interview: December 6, 2016 London

POE: December 19, 2016 Las Vegas

N-400 filed: September 30, 2019

Interview: March 22, 2021 Seattle

Oath: March 22, 2021 COVID-style same-day oath
