Does anyone know the procedure to get american passport for a new born child born child born in Canada.

Father of a child is US citizen while mother is on the work permit in Canada, planning to deliver in Canada

I can tell you a little bit about our experience. When I son was born in Vancouver 2 years ago, we made an

appointment at the US consul office in Downtown, and had an interview with them so he could get his US citizenship.

We had to bring our 19 days old baby with us to the interview as they wanted to see him in person.

We actually got denied at this interview as my husband misunderstood the instruction and didn't

bring enough documents. We had to gather all documents in a few days of time, and bring them to the

embassy and left them with guards outside. Then they called us, and said they were approving our case.

We received my son's birth certificate and passport 2 wks later in mail.

The main thing is the US citizen parent has to prove they lived in the country for at least 5 years. It imvloves

bringing a lot of documents to prove this during the interview.

The tricky thing is they wouldn't tell you what documents you can bring to prove 5 year's presence in the US

and you have to figure it out pretty much yourself.

After we got denied, I kept asking the gentleman who interviewed us to give us some guidance on what

sort of documents to bring. He said there is no specific guideline, and we need to figure it out ourselves.

But he did say it can be any document including employment letters, rent lease, high school diploma etc, to

prove my husband's physical presence in the country.

Our Interview was about 10 minutes. We went through security, and waited in special waiting room which

was much nicer then regular waiting area. I guess they put us there because we had our baby with us.

I remember everyone was pretty nice to us.

Let me know if you have any questions.

We've went through the CRBA process for our son, right after he was born. We're both in Canada on work permit and the mother is a USC. the best piece of advice I can give you is for the parent who's a USC to file for FOIA request (https://www.foia.gov/) and get a detailed entry/exit report - it took a few weeks to arrive but we got a detailed report of EVERY entry and exist from the US since birth, it was easy to proof they have met requirement for presence in the US that way. we also brought copies of tax returns from the US (of 4 or 5 years, I don't remember) but they didn't ask for them.

Interview is simple and took around 10 minutes. They asked for both parents and baby to come to the interview and asked us questions to confirm we both agree to the CRBA. You can combine the requests and get CRBA and US passport in the same time (we did so), arrived in the mail a few weeks later. If you have an urgent travel need you might be able to expedite it.
