The Democrat leading the nation’s biggest state is facing a raging pandemic, vaccine distribution problems and a nascent recall drive.

His problem is that blaming Trump will no longer be an option. He is going to held responsible for his failings.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

It was interesting to see the Left leaning initiatives get slapped down in CA this past November, makes me wonder if a recall of Newsom will succeed.

I sure hope a recall succeeds, and I really hope @laylalex signs the petition then votes him out

I will not be signing a petition to remove Newsom. I do not believe that his missteps relating to COVID have been enough to remove him, and the expense of a recall election that will almost certainly fail (he is still popular in this state) is something we do not need at a time when money is better spent on handling the pandemic. He is up for reelection next year and can be primaried then. I understand that people are upset with him -- I am not a huge fan myself, but I think he has been mostly competent over the past couple of years -- but the timing could not be worse. This isn't a Gray Davis scenario where everyone hates him. If his popularity ratings were in the tank, maybe there would be more support for it.

The reality isn't nearly as terrible as that headline seems, honestly. I am waiting to see who his primary challengers are. A Republican winning in this state is pretty much impossible, so we need a strong Democrat with the chops to run this place. I would have said Alex Padilla but he's a senator as of yesterday.

Some of the Republicans cited in that article -- Ted Costa (self-described political wacko), Jennifer Kerns (led the fight against Prop 8 ) -- aren't exactly straight shooters. Joe Rodota is on the other hand, and I don't disagree with him that Newsom has a particularly hard hand to play right now. Some of it's within his control, and some of it isn't. Personally I do not agree with recall elections. You lump it until it's over, as my mom says. Imagine if there was a law that permitted presidential recall! Don't you think that would have been a massive waste of time and energy halfway through Trump's term, even though his popularity never topped 50%?

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

Don't you both share a liking for the French Laundry?

Well, yes. And I am not so like Marie Antoinette that I would go there if I had made a very public stand on the importance of observing state rules about dining, in or out of doors.

Any views on politicians ignoring the recent requirement to wear masks on Federal property?

Me personally? Well as of today it's against the law, so I'd say they were willingly breaking the law.

What about if 'we have bigger issues to worry about at this moment in time.' Well that is what I saw the White House Press Secretary say on CNN this afternoon.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I'm not sure what the context of that was, so I'll have a look later and get back to you. :)

Also, I'm pretty sure I'm not in charge of enforcement of Federal law, but I haven't checked recently so maybe I am? :P
