by your updated police certificate, do you mean getting a new one with the new name even when the old one is not yet expired?  I thought that was not necessary.

Updated means not-expired.

Hi Folks,

I dont know if anyone of you have tried to cross the border Windsor/Detroit Bridge Ambassador recently. But my wife (US Citizen) and was visiting me here in Toronto Canada for sometime and now want to return the US but I would like to stay with her in the US for few weeks.

Do you think if we try to cross the border together from Canada at POE above by car they will let us in since we are direct family members? Or they will let her in only and I will be inadmissible?

I’m in Sault Ste. Marie and wondered the same thing since there’s only a bridge that separates the USA and Canada here. I ended up just calling them and was told that it’s a one way deal. Us Canadians can fly to the USA but they can drive here. We can’t drive to the USA or be a passenger. They will not let you cross if you aren’t essential services. Mind you that was before the new travel restrictions so I would imagine even less people are crossing now...

Thank you for confirming so I guess I should just fly to the US. Now do you think they would let my wife drive my car to the US if she has a Valid Driving license from the US and a letter from me permitting her to drive my car there?

I doubt it but you can always call and ask.

Hi All! I finally have an interview date for Feb 24th (IR1). Someone might have answered this question but I just want to confirm if it's okay to just bring my husband's tax returns for 2019 (what I uploaded to NVC) or do I need to bring 2020? Assuming no but just want to double check. Also, I think it's okay to bring a certified copy of marriage certificate but just want to make sure. Thanks!! :)

Yay! :)It definitely wouldn't hurt to bring the 2020 taxes just incase! What was your DQ date?

If your husband filed 2020 taxes already it would be best to bring those documents with you. As for the marriage certificate I think they want original copies of that, birth certificate and criminal record check.

congrats on the interview and good luck!

My DQ date was June 1st! He hasn't done his 2020 taxes and he would rather wait. I just want to make sure they will be okay with 2019 and it won't be a hassle.  Okay, I'll make sure to get the original marriage certificate. Thanks for your help!!

Originals are always ideal, but a certified copy (not to be confused with a notarized one) is acceptable:

”If you are or have been married, you must obtain original marriage certificate/s or certified copies of EVERY marriage.”

Good thing you're planning for two days in advance. That'll give you some breathing room in case of changes.

I'll be there Monday too. 🙂 Good luck!

Good luck to you too! What a journey!

Hello! Genuinely concerned about police certificate  - another ask about it, sorry! Paranoid.

mine says PROTECTED A and for the PRIVACY ACT REQUEST TYPE: for non-certified criminal information.

Date fingerprinted was April 4th, 2020.

is this OK?

thanks!

Hello everyone!

Long time lurker on this thread, and have found lots of helpful advice here.

I am the U.S. citizen and my husband has an asylum case pending in Canada, but is there legally and has a work permit. When he crossed the border (initially was in U.S. but didn't overstay his visa), the Canadian government seized his passport and currently still has it. We were DQ'd in June 2020, and hoping that his IL is in the next batch.

I'm aware that he will need his original passport for the interview, but am unsure about what he should do to make sure he has it for the interview. I'm worried that if he requests his passport back, it will end/affect his legal status in Canada which obviously won't be good for the interview stage.

Should he request to have it back for the interview? Get a new one made? Any guidance/advice on this would be greatly appreciated!

People here with experience are of the opinion that this is the wrong one. Consulate has also denied this one. This is accepted by NVC but consulate asks for one which says ---- "Other (Provide details)". Suggest you get a new one.

The fingerprinter was kind enough to tell me, that "for non-certified criminal information." does not include sealed / suspended sentences whereas "Other(Provide details)" does, so kinda makes sense that the preference is for wholesome record.
