I agree, this should be good enough reason to have everyone’s interview expedited. This has been a mental toll on everyone already, the new restrictions will only add to it.

*everyone's interview gets expedited*

Sweet everyone let's get in the same line we are already in!

Joking aside an expedite doesn't create new interviews its just a way for priority cases to jump the line for specific reasons. There is a reason Montreal doesn't do them very often. Most people going through this process have a bunch of reasons to get in to the country immediately. Montreal has been doing great last 3 months they have done more interviews than they were doing pre covid based on the numbers. if they can keep it up hopefully the backlog will shrink considerably this year.

And ya the new restrictions are potentially terrible for people like us. At the same time they are supposed to be targeted at non essential travel so let's wait and see if they apply to spouses.

I believe @rafale1973 just dealt with this.

Nope, wasn’t me. In my case my province doesn’t allow me to change my last name. When I asked at the consulate, the officer told me that I will be able to change it at the naturalization.

Anyone with any experience regarding having two different last names on passport and ID?

At the provincial level, such as health card and driver license, banking and what not all my documents have my assumed last name (married name)

At the federal level, SSN, birth certificate and passport all my documents still contain my maiden name.    I didn't want to be bothered changing every last piece of my ID when we married, so I just assumed his last name and never thought much of it untill this process where I now have 2 last names depending on what document or ID you look at.

Just worried this may cause some issues and confusions closer to interview time and hoping to clear my worries if any of you have some information on what to expect when last names are jumbled the way mine are.

For the stuff to do with Immigration, you typically use your Federal ID.  If you want to use your married name in the States, I'd probably change it on your birth certificate and passport now, if you can.  The passport will serve as your temporary green card once you interview and enter the US, and will have the name used for everything in the US.  It will also mean you have a "fresh" passport that is good for 10 years so you aren't like us, scrambling for a GC so we can send the passport back to Canada for a renewal (thanks, covid, for ruining our mojo!), for a LONG time.

I finally have an appointment. I have been calling local SSN office for weeks now. Each person who answers the phone gave me a different story. It took a lot of frustration and persistence hounding them to finally get on the list for an appointment. They are booking about a week out in my area.

Persistence is key to get an SSN appointment. In Washington D.C., they repeatedly told me a supervisor would call me back to schedule and then never did. Finally (after 4 months of calling and waiting!) I told them I was not getting off the phone until I spoke with a supervisor. The supervisor scheduled the appointment for 4 days later and everything was very quick after that.

Did anyone recently arrive in Canada from US. I heard they are making mandatory quarantine in hotel and asking to pay from pocket (about $2000)??

If you're outside of Canada and have the potential for interview soon, I'd probably get back sooner than later.  It's becoming more and more challenging....

Still trying to find out the particulars. It sounds like there is currently no mandatory hotel quarantine for those traveling via the land border.

Regarding air travel, there are no specifics to say whether or not this restriction applies to essential travel (medical, immigration, etc.) or just non-essential travel (which sometimes includes spouse reunification and sometimes doesn't, depending on what part of the travel.gc.ca website you go to). There are also no timelines for when this restriction would be lifted. This is a huge blow to those of us who travel to visit our spouses and those who will need to return in the next couple of months for interviews. Travel insurance bound after today will likely not cover these fees since they have been announced and are a part of government requirements, but check with your travel insurance provider.

This restriction was just announced today.

I returned from the US last week and am halfway through my 14-day quarantine as required.

I just got out of my two week quarantine in Canada, (into Ontario) but nothing had changed yet. I’m curious to hear of anyone coming home this past week.

And unfortunately, we cannot drive into the US via land crossing on a spousal visit.

I fully am expecting these rules to get implemented at the land border soon, though. I believe we have one more week before the Biden administration announces the changes to the land border for the US side, which will likely be when Canada announces theirs.

If you can get back to Canada now, I'd do it ASAP.
