I do cross border and am pleased to have kept mine since I did have to go back to Canada for 18mo.  You have to file an FBAR if there's ever over $10K in your accounts.

Please fill out your timeline as per the instructions in @Hawk Riders profile.  Please read the FAQ's as well.

You're a Canadian citizen with American Permanent Residency.  You need to enter Canada on your Canadian passport and return to the US with your green card.  You will still be subject to all quarantine measures, etc while this covid business continues.

Ah thank you so much. I guess I just woke up and started considering the tax implications and also started getting curious how I will be treated at the border coming back into Canada.

I'm currently trying to figure this out, as I will have remaining Canadian bills to pay once I leave Canada. I know on the FAQ it says that certain bank accounts will be charged a tax of some sort, but it doesn't list checking accounts. So am I understanding you correctly in that if you keep less than $10K in your account you don't have to do any sort of extra tax paperwork? Or is there still something I'll have to declare come tax time next year in the States?

Hey all,

Just a question for those who have recently had their interview and received their passport back to a residence in Ontario.

What are processing speeds like? How long did it take for puralator to return your passport from Montreal.
Just trying to plan travel, (interveiw is next Wednesday) if all goes well.
Thanks

Hi everyone, this might be a strange question but once we activate the visa, will gov of Canada be notified in any way? Also, upon going back to Canada to visit, how will we be treated at customs? Are we still considered a Canadian dual citizen or an American?

Covid changes things up a bit. Normally (outside of Covid) you do not need your Canadian passport to cross into Canada, just your green card is sufficient. Carrying a copy of your Canadian birth certificate (or the small form version of it) can make the process easier. You may need your Canadian passport to enter Canada under current Covid restrictions. In either instance you'll be considered a US Permanent Resident with Canadian Citizenship.

Once you get your US citizenship, the border crossings have different standards. Going into Canada, they will consider you a dual citizen. Going back into the US, they will consider you a US citizen.

Do we have to file FBAR even if it's a business account (not personal)?

And if we file it does it mean both Canada and US will tax it?

My husband lived in Ontario as well. He was in Issued - final processing on CEAC on a Thursday. He received his tracking number via email on Friday and passport was in hand by Purolator on Monday - so it was all fairly quick once you see that status update on CEAC! As always, don't make any confirmed travel plans until passport/visa is in hand! Good luck!

For the issued/final processing status, is that what it says after you attend your interview?

I can't answer that.  If you have a business, I'd definitely be talking to an accountant on how to best manage cross border.

How do you send large sum of money over the border? Are there any banks that can transfer large amount of money to a US bank account?

Please fill in your timeline and see @Hawk Riders profile for a link to the FAQ's and how to be added to the spreadsheet.  Also, please read back a couple of pages because there is ongoing discussion about this topic.
