""Regardless of how you feel about it personally, do you think that deporting all illegal immigrants who are currently in the United States back to their native countries is a realistic and achievable goal, or not?"

was the question

Just because some believe it is atask that is hard or " impossible : to do doesn't not mean we do not exercise our resources ( National Guard, Military, Border patrol local police) to do our best and once enforcement truly g=ebgins maybe these Illegals won't be so quick to go Flooding hospitals or taking over public schools that they put nothing into, maybe they will not be so quick to try to take advantage of social services that are menat to serve those who are legal residnets or Citizens. With enforcement and cooperation between more thna one agnecy we can achieve this.

Instea dof sending more troops to Iraq why not send trhem to our southenr abttle ground where we are being invaded everyday.

It is very realistic and can be done!

Are you volunteering to foot the bill? which will likely be in the billions? Our other resources have other purposes, their job is not to identify and deport illegal aliens already in the country. That falls under the DHS. It can be done, but is it money well spend? What do we as a country gain from spending billions to accomplish this?

We save Billions! Our childrens Education standard and raised back to where they should be , Property value increases, no more depressed wages. Social services are free d to support those who put into the system or who are here LEGALLY, health Insurance costs could go down. Our nation is more secure, more able to prevent 9/11 type attacks. so yes it the long run it will save Billions.

At the currrent rate of deportation, it would take 72 years to get them all out.

I remember back in the day the border patrol roamed the streets like cops and checked for docs, just like asking for someones ID! If they didnt have em, they got a free bus ride south.

72 years?

We don't need to deport anyone. Just enforce the laws we have, make it impossable for them to work and they will leave on their own. Funny how things would work out if we just enforce the law.

I agree! Dont' give them handouts, Prosecute their employers, put pressure on those who hire them make it a Federal Crime to hire them. Do NOT allow them to enroll in social service programs if they can not prove they are legally here in the USA

Enforce the border by IMMEDIATLY deported all who are caught in the act of crossing illegally none of this arrest , then have them released to return for a court date that they never show up for. Police Should be free to inquire about immigration status if they have reason to believe an individual is here illegally.

Back in the day? You mean we had a national ID card in the past? And all Americans were required to show it to law enforcement officials at all times? Did they ever accidentally deport Americans who had left their wallets at home? Gee.

Anyhow, yeah, 72 years, because sorting out who is here legally and who isn't, and whether they're an EWI or an overstay, whether they deserve a three- or ten- or lifetime ban are things that take time to go through the court system. We'd have to increase the number of judges by a factor of 100 to get it down to a reasonable time. Plus, you'd have to build more jails, commission many more officers. You get the idea.

That's a lot of cash that I'd rather see go other places, like improving legal immigration or securing the border, and cracking down on employers, not just rounding people up.

What part of that is NOT a guest worker program???
Guest worker program: allows people from other countries to come here on a temporary basis.

Amnesty: grants legal status to illegal immigrants who are already here.

Need a dictionary? Amnesty only means being forgiven for a crime, a crime which would otherwise make them ineligible for any other visa or status.

EWI makes one ineligible for any other status. Under the bill, even fugitives - those already ordered deported - were to be eligible to obtain legal status. Fits the description, doesn't it?

Heres how it went down, I observed it all the time when I was a teenager. Border patrol drives by slowly observing three mexicans with backpacks.Mexicans take off in every direction, border patrol jumps from vehicle gives chase puts them in car. bus leaves every wednesday evening from jail! SIMPLE.

Hurray for preserving the status quo....

The status quo is bad. This bill would have been even worse. If you are driving with two wheels on the edge of a cliff, that is bad. Turning towards the cliff edge would be worse. Given those two choices, I'll take the status quo.

Yep.
Those Senators who supported the bill were ineffectual in spite of the fact that poll after poll show an overwhelming majority of Americans support offering some kind of legal status for those who've been living and working here illegally.

Not according to the news outlets:

But the bill's enemies simply had the votes and, according to polls, the support of the public.

"This immigration bill has become a war between the American people and their government," said Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., one of the bill's chief opponents. "This vote today is really not about immigration. It's about whether or not we're going to listen to the American people and realize that we need to proceed more carefully in a more sensitive manner and appear to be listening to the concerns of the American people."
