Hurray for preserving the status quo....

Exactly. There was an immigration lawyer who helped sponsor provisions in the bill who was on the local public radio station - he said this was an example of how not pass a bill. Those Senators who supported the bill were ineffectual in spite of the fact that poll after poll show an overwhelming majority of Americans support offering some kind of legal status for those who've been living and working here illegally.

No they don't, Steven. The majority of Americans are not in favor of amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Whether it's right or wrong is open to debate, but please don't distort the facts.

I was paraphrasing what the immigration lawyer had said, for one...but he is correct - look at the polls.

Ah - the usual Steven-and-Jinky way of responding to people's posts by quoting a third party

instead of writing from personal experience.

Anyway, I looked at the polls and saw nothing of the kind.

UPI Poll: Guest-worker program support

WASHINGTON, June 22 (UPI) -- More than 60 percent of UPI-Zogby International poll participants favor a guest-worker program for immigrants to the United States.

The guest-worker provision in the immigration reform bill before the U.S. Senate has been among the most controversial. Even though President George Bush supports the idea, many conservatives say it amounts to amnesty for people who entered the country illegally.

But 19.9 percent of the 8,300 U.S. residents asked had a very favorable opinion of a guest-worker program and another 41.5 percent said they were somewhat favorable of the policy. A total 33.1 percent were on the unfavorable side -- 18 percent were somewhat unfavorable and 15.1 percent very unfavorable.

A slight plurality (33.9 percent) of participants "somewhat agreed" such a program would curb illegal immigration but 27.5 percent strongly disagreed and 19.7 percent somewhat disagreed.

Most respondents (37.8 percent strongly disagreed and 18.4 percent somewhat disagreed) said a guest worker shouldn't be allow to bring family members into the United States. And nearly 70 percent disagree that guest workers would return to their home countries after their visas expire.

There is a 1.1 percentage point margin of error in the Zogby interactive poll taken June 15-18.

Large Majorities Support Guest Worker Program and

Border Crackdown

By Mark Schulman and Tara Regan

With the immigration debate raging in Congress and immigration supporters spilling out into the streets, the latest Time Poll finds a lopsided majority of the American public, 72%, favor a "guest worker" program in a head-to-head match-up over a House bill that would criminalize illegal immigration.

* Only 1 in 4 (25%) support the more drastic House version that would make illegals felons, allowing no illegals into the country, with no guest worker provisions.

The latest Time Poll of 1,004 adults, conducted March 29-30, finds that even a large majority of border state residents, 78%, favor the guest worker approach over expelling illegals. Large majorities of Republicans (66%), Democrats (75%), and Independents (73%) favor the guest worker approach.

The question or argument is whether the majority of Americans support a guest worker program...poll after poll have shown that they do.

I said they oppose amnesty, not a guest worker program.
