Its worth a go - but I think it will be a long time yet before we get a satisfactory resolution to this issue. I doubt anyone will try again until next year now - likely it will be a big campaigning issue.

Yay! Finally a solution erekose agrees with! :D

Probably there is not just one solution to the problem. As Mawilson said "follow the money". A big draw for illegals to come to this country is to get money to send "home" where ever that may be. If as has been reported that perhaps up to $60 billion is being sent out of the country by aliens and that the majority of those funds are by illegals and further that the majority of those funds are to Mexico, well!! It shouldn't be too difficult for somebody to come up with a viable solution to restrict money transfers to "US validated documented bank accounts". Once that is done and the border is secured the illegals can make a choice to return home with their money and chance getting back here or not. If they choose to go OK, if they choose to stay in the shadows perhaps we get the benefit of the extra $60 billion spent to help our economy. Either way perhaps it is a start to control what is seen as a problem.

That is sooooo gooood!!! I find it interesting that it is being characterized as a "defeat for Bush". It is a defeat for Bush and the dems. It just so happens that Bush lost his mind (I know, most of you think he never had one. :P ) and sided with Kennedy and company. But thats OK, this damn thing is dead and that is the important thing.

Rubbish; it's a defeat for everyone who supported it, and there were plenty of Republicans supporting it and Democrats who were against it.

Unlike pretty much every other bill, politicians ignored party lines on this one. Hate to burst your bubble.

I hate to burst your bubble. While what you say is somewhat true, the Dems are hands down the pro-amnesty party and it has been a part of their party platform for quite some time. Cheap votes is the name of the game. Yes, there are those from both parties that crossed over to the other side. Look at the final tally to kill this bill:

I'm neither a Republican or a Democrat and have voted Independent for years. But I call 'em like I see them.

As long as the far Left Wing controls the Democratic party it will remain the party of amnesty (for illegal aliens). The Republicans will remain the party of amnesty for crooked employers and could give a rat's azz about the illegal aliens. They didn't support amnesty because there wasn't enough sugar for their corporate benefactors. Cheap labor is the name of their game.

Let's face it...the bill was all about a mass blanket amnesty for almost every illegal alien in the USA and even for those that could sneak in afterward and cheat the system even more.

That's my take on this debacle.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

The Berlin Wall held up pretty good for decades.

wow, brother reinhard..a german who praised the berlin wall...?

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Not praising it at all. In fact, I hated it. Looked at that damn thing each and every day of my life growing up on the dark side of it - it literally separated my hometown from Berlin. Here, I was just stating that it was quite functional in terms of keeping people from crossing the border.

I'll say this...I'm disgusted by any politician who would even entertain the idea of amnesty for illegal aliens OR those who would employ them.

However, saying that the Democrats were pro-amnesty and the Republicans were not is a gross oversimplification of the issue.

Sure...add some more Dems to the Senate, especially to the House of Reps, and put a pro amnesty President of either party in the White House after 2008 and watch the 2 morons Kennedy/Reid push a mass blanket amnesty through without any Republican support. Hell...if they stack enough Dems in both chambers of Congress they can even do it with an anti-amnesty President. They can just override the veto if they have the votes. It will be a slam dunk. Do you have any doubts? Hillary or Obama will sign a mass blanket amnesty if it hits their desk in a NY second. Do you have any doubts? I don't!

As I said...I'm not a registered Republican or a Democrat. I consider myself an independent voter. I just call 'em like I see 'em and vote for the lesser of 2 weasels.

For now...having the US House stacked with Republicans is the best hope of stopping any amnesty from ever seeing the light of day. That more than anything is a sure bet.

From what I have seen every Dem presidential candidate was for the amnesty bill but every Rep candidate has said they are against the bill. Three guesses what will happen if the next election increases the dem lead in congress and we have a dem president.

Personally I'm not sure what would happen if the Dems won; I'm not a single-issue voter but I haven't even made up my mind who I'm voting for in 2008; I'm looking at all the candidates, Republicans included, and haven't found anyone I would want to vote for.
