They can always impeach Andrew Johnson again.

What about all those past Presidents that were also slave owners?  Then we can add Jimmy Carter for pardoning Jefferson Davis, heck President Carter may want to run for federal office again.

Senator Paul read this on the floor and it is spot on.  Impeachment has become a revenge tool.

The Senate's impeachment trial is illegal and a sham

Democrats claim to want to unify the country, but impeaching a former president, a private citizen, is the antithesis of unity. This impeachment is nothing more than a partisan exercise designed to divide the country further.

They have brazenly appointed an openly pro-impeachment Democrat to preside over the trial. This is not fair or impartial, and it hardly encourages any kind of unity for the country.

If we are about to try to impeach a president, then where is the chief justice? If the accused is no longer president, then where is the constitutional power to impeach him?

Private citizens don’t get impeached. Impeachment is for removal from office, and the accused here has already left office.

Hyperpartisan Democrats are about to drag our great country down into the gutter of rancor and vitriol, the likes of which have never been seen in our nation’s history. Instead of doing the nation’s work with their new control of the House, Senate, and executive branch, Democrats are wasting the people’s time on a partisan vendetta against a man no longer in office. It’s almost as if they have no ability to exist except in opposition to Donald Trump. Without him as their boogeyman, they might have to legislate, and actually convince the public that their policy prescriptions are the right ones.

Democrats are about to do something no self-respecting senator has ever stooped to. They are insisting the election is actually not over, and so they insist on regurgitating its bitterness. In the past, calmer heads have typically prevailed in our history and allowed public opinion to cast blame where blame is deserved.

Impeachment (and trial) is a political tool used for removing someone from office who is actually in office.  It was never meant to be used for hatred filled vengeance.  Since Trump is no longer in office, what will the Senators actually be voting on?

I hear ya. .Democrats have been hell bent on finding Trump guilty of anything, anything to damage him, which is what this is all about, including the possibility of barring him from holding office again. . Impeachment has been used and abused by Democrats so much in the last 4 years that they cheapened it, using it as vehicle to destroy their opponent, having nothing to do with upholding the Constitution.. And now that we know what the vote count will be, (Thank you Rand Paul ) the impeachment is dead,  but the Dunces are proceeding anyway to appease their base and potentially bar Trump from holding office again, Maybe that's why Romney, Sass and Toomey are on board with it, they and Democrats hate the man, and they don't want to live the next 4 years wondering if Trump will run in 2024.

I don't think they can bar Trump from running for office again unless they actually convict him in the Senate.

Perhaps Rand Paul would feel differently if that mob of insurrectionists had turned right instead of left, and had actually managed to lynch some of his peers, the Vice President being top of their list.

Wasn't Rand Paul already assaulted by an Antifa/BLM mob?  I also seem to remember a neighbor/Democrat physically battering him, and he was there when the rabid Bernie supporter was shooting up the baseball practice.

Which actually has nothing to do with the topic.

You insinuated that Senator Paul would have written or spoken differently if he had experienced the wrath of the mob.  I was simply pointing out that he has been subjected to it more than most in Congress.

It does actually because you said this "Perhaps Rand Paul would feel differently if that mob of insurrectionists had turned right instead of left". He was surrounded outside of the RNC and verbally assaulted by people saying "Say her name" and " Why won't you do anything about her"

To be fair, I was the one that actually said that.  The point made that I was responding to was that Rand Paul would have thought differently if the events on January 6th had become more violent against those in the Senate chamber.  I don't think any of us can predict what Senator Paul would say especially since that did not happen.  I was simply pointing out that Senator Paul has been subjected to several physical and verbal assaults personally by political extremist, so IMO, I don't think he changes his opinion.

I think the only way we'll see a conviction is if the Republicans finally understand that he's got to go once and for all.

The only reason they would feel he's got to go is because he's a lightning rod, other than that, Trump is a proven success, A success who's been replaced by a proven failure.
