I am not in a major city so choice is very limited, LPR or US citizen the cost is the same.

oh god.  Are they requiring us to insure her before granting her visa to U.S?  Or is it just a recommended subject?

Well, what is your plan for that?  She won't be eligible for medicare.  It is a big expense to bring over elderly parents, who will need to make use of the US health system.

You need to do more research.

I'm planning to pay for it.  I just don't want something ridiculous like $1k-$2k a month.  We can't afford that.  Hopefully from obamacare i can get something less than $500 or even $300 a month for emergency situation so we don't go broke if something goes wrong that cost like $100k.  For the first 6 months at least.  I think MIL will probably get a day job after 6 months to have insurance coverage and something to do.  It's boring sitting at home all day anyways.

Okay.  But, if she doesn't happen to get a job with benefits like that (is she fluent in English?), $1k/month would not be at all unusual to spend for an aging parent who does not have a medicare benefit.  Even if the monthly premiums are $300 for just catastrophic coverage, there will be other expenses that won't be covered, such as prescriptions.

Welcome to US healthcare. It’s expensive, especially when you’re older. Hopefully is not a strategy.  Do the research - you are right that you could potentially face big financial consequences if you don’t have the proper insurance. There’s a reason many people decide it’s better for their parents to stay where they know there are no risks in getting healthcare.
