Hello. Although I am not yet at the K1 Visa interview stage, I am hoping to possibly have some insight in regards to questions that I have.

Back in 2011, I left my last place of employment, due to deteriorating working conditions, personal family issues and my own well-being. As it goes, I have not been employed since then. During that time I became an unofficial carer for my son, which continued over the next ten years (or more). It is possible that I will soon become a carer for one of my parents. This time hopefully receiving a payment for doing so. Since around 2012, I have been receiving a Government welfare payment, which is my sole form of income.

Which brings me to my questions.

1: Is it possible that due to my lack of employment for quite some time, that my visa application may be rejected at the interview?  I do plan to be completely honest with any questions that I am asked regarding this, as to be otherwise is just simply futile.

2: Is volunteer work acceptable at all? As I will be taking up some volunteer work within the next week or two. Or is that regarded as non-relevant when it comes to the Consular Officer?

3: Finances: What is considered as an acceptable amount of money that I should have to take with me to the US, if I am asked during my interview?  Could having less than $5000AU (as an example) be seen as not enough? My fiance will of course be sponsoring me.

I hope this all makes sense, as it's nearing 2am here.

1.  Your employment status and history is meaningless

2.  Its fine but not sure what you are worried about

3.  Enough to buy your lunch or make a phone call.

YMMV

^ This is what matters to the consulate.  What the consul officer will care about more is your fiance's finances.  Your own finances and employment history will very likely not matter much at the K1 visa interview.  No need to worry as long as your fiance is well-qualified to financially sponsor you.

Your fiancé will be financially responsible for you, so the consulate will not be interested in your employment (and that would end anyway since you will be moving).

I'm curious how that would work. You will be moving to the US, so you are not the most obvious choice to become their carer.

My parents asked me to become their carer, with the knowledge that I will eventually be leaving for the US. So they know that it will be only temporary. They would rather have someone they know help to care for them, however if a carer is still needed when it comes time for me to leave, then that will be arranged with a relevant agency. There is no one else in my family who can help once I leave.

Thankyou all for your replies to my questions, it is appreciated.

I would draft a resume/cover letter and plan on what you’d like to do in the US if you want to feel better about it. Although my fiancé has good work history annotated in our application, AND bringing over two years of salary, my lawyer still advised us to draft a resume in the case it is brought up. It’s not ideal to look like you will be reliant on US welfare benefits and to prove otherwise is great. https://www.uscis.gov/news/public-charge-fact-sheet

If you’re sponsors financial affidavit is strong, you should be fine as that’s a heavily weighted part of the application & not your employment history. And your honesty.

But we are coming prepared.  Well wishes.

1. I'm assuming you are the beneficiary so what I list here pertains to you. Your income or savings has no bearing on the interview. The totality of the financial information that the petitioner will submit to support the I-134, Affidavit of Support is what is weighted on the decision.

2. Again, volunteer work will have no bearing at the interview. It's a no nothing for a CO who is adjudicating your case. Having said that thank you for your work as a volunteer. I personally like to appreciate those who are helping the less fortunate.

3. Your savings would have to be substantial to be considered. The amount you quote will not influence the CO.

This is the maximum financial evidence you will need for the interview.

EVIDENCE OF SUPPORT: You must submit any evidence which will show that you and members of your family who will accompany you are not likely to become public charges while in the United States. Visa petitioner (US Citizen) will have to complete form I-134. If the petitioner does not qualify as a sponsor, a Joint-Sponsor should present (any US Citizen living in the US or Legal Permanent Resident), who will also have to complete form I-134. Both the Sponsor (Petitioner) as well as the Joint-Sponsor, will have to present last year's income tax return transcripts. W2 form and proof of current and sustainable income (e.g., letter of employment on letterhead including salary and start date, most recent salary receipts, bank accounts, the value of properties, etc.). You may download the I-134 affidavit at https://www.uscis.gov/i-134. Bank statements in place of a letter from the bank will work just fine. Print the statement that shows the opening balance for a month and the closing balance for that month. Do that for 12 months—no need to print off all pages of a bank statement.

What are you confused about?

Am I wasting my time in going further with my K1 Visa? I will be 54 in a couple of months, could that go against me during my interview?

Again in reference to my financial situation, @Greenbaum reply has left me somewhat confused.

In the reply it was said that my income or savings has no bearing on the interview. Then states that my savings would have to be substantial to be considered. I don't understand what is meant here.

Age has nothing to do with the visa. Petitioner's income is King.

You don't have to worry about finances, that's all on your US fiance! The US govt wants to make sure that the US citizen can provide and take care of their foreign fiance. I fully believe age is a number. If you're in love and want to be married, then it's worth pursuing the K1.

The only reason to be worried is if you're having 2nd thoughts on your fiance and unsure if you want to spend the rest of your life with him

That user always leaves me confused.

The financial part matters mostly moving on after 129 F. But it’s still the responsibility

of your US sponsor to have funds. Don’t fret.

Thankyou 😊 I understand it much more clearly now, and am worrying less. It is all such a complex process, that does not need to be further complicated by one's own worried thoughts.

I see that you are in Australia too. I'm in Perth. Best wishes to you for your K1 Visa! Maybe we can keep eachother updated as to our progress?
