Has anyone failed a medical, thus not being able to get their visa?

If so (and you don't mind sharing the story), can you tell us why you failed? was it disease related? physical pain/disablement? psychological?

thanks!

I did not fail and I have polycystic ovarian disease, rheumatism in my knees, and anxiety disorder. I passed my exam but had an unpleasant time at the POE in Chicago because of it. I was pulled to the side and waited for about 20 minutes for someone from the CDC to talk to me. Very embarrassing.

I was worried because I have type 1 diabetes, but it wasn't a problem! I think you really need to have one of the illnesses listed (ie. aids, tuberculosis, etc.), have had serious psychological problems where you were a threat to others or test positive to illicit drugs to 'fail' the medical. The doctors are supposed to let you know before you get to the Consulate though, so that if you need treatment you can get it, or if you need documentation to verify your recovery you can get it.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I saw a similar thread to this where one or two posters were saying that the US has a free health system of sorts (actually they were implying it was equivalent to the uk), and therefore anyone who is fat/smokes/varicose veins/high blood pressure /jay walkers/hot coffee droppers/erotic self stranglers etc would or should be excluded... they even said anyone with blood pressure 20 points above an olympic athlete should be refused unless they submitted to turning themselves into a drugged out zombie who would live forever at no cost to the state

My wife assures me that it isn't free and they take your assets after they treat you if you have no insurance or money... you have to be destitute and remain so in order to escape paying

I reckon the law is more concerned about infectious stuff / drug users as has been mentioned ... the only threads I have seen where a problem has arisen has been with illegal drugs - but the medical centre charges £200 for afull physical so they do everything to justify the money

I am sure somewhere around VJ or in the web you can find the precise list of health grounds for inadmissibility. Like someone said, it has to do with some particular physical illnesses (aids, TB) and with mental disorders that pose a threat to yourself and others (how the FFF they determine that is anyone's guess  ).

But in general, it's pretty straightforward. So, I would recommend you check out the list and, if you fall within any of the categories, prepare yourself to file a waiver - I am not too familiar with this process, but I believe there is a sub-forum that deals specifically with waivers.

Good luck!!!!

Peace, L.

My wife just took the medical, and she missed her plane because the hospital thought she had fluid filled lungs from the Chest X-Ray. They wanted to keep her for months and do invasive microscopy. They apparently had the right to hold onto the forms until they were satisfied. I guess they were astounded that she was standing, much less in perfect health - with fluid filled lungs and all. Or maybe they thought she was from Waterworld. I dunno.

Anyway, we got them to release the forms and clear her today, but the plane is tomorrow, so we will not be able to get the visa by then. The next plane is Aug 24 :( I may have to buy a new plane ticket
