Health Insurance for K1 visa holders

Best option is to be added to your spouse's employer-based plan ASAP.  You don't necessarily need to be married to be added.

Obamacare is the best place to check. Put the beneficiary onto your work policy as soon as you can. Talk with your HR department about your options.

I would consider an actual "Underwritten" short term medical plan if your employer doesn't allow your unmarried fiancé onto your policy.

Timeline

If you have insurance through your employer, then once married, that is a qualifying event and you can add your spouse to your employer's health insurance.

 

So worse case you have 90 days of gap. I dealt with the gap by:

 

* Getting a monthly, renewal travelers insurance policy that was essentially pre-ObamaCare major medical. Worse case there would be an illness that required an evacuation back to her home country and we would start over the process after she got well.

 

* My employer has domestic partner coverage, and as soon as we landed, I applied for my fiancee as my domestic partner (qualifying event being that she moved). The application was approved and I was able to let the travel insurance lapse.

 

* Once married, that was another qualifying event. And so the insurance was slightly cheaper.

Unfortunately there is no affordable health care insurance in America, unless you're so poor that you get it free, in which case you wouldn't be allowed into the New America. America has the most expensive health care in the entire world.

 

If you're looking for affordable healthcare you'll want to migrate to a civilized first world country like France, Canada or Sweden.
