Ann Coulter always goes way over the line. There is no turning back for her now really.

And I am registered Republican and yet can also dislike Ann Coulter. I don't like anyone who uses low personal attacks, no matter if they are on the left or right. Both sides do it of course. But I am getting tired of fellow "conservatives" defending someone like Ann Coulter. I'd feel the same as if someone from the left defends a complete wacko that is extreme. You don't have to pick one wacko over another to wacko defend, just don't defend any wackos at all.

A personal attack is a personal attack! To what degree? Thats hair splitting to slant your argument to make your point!

Do you think AC did herself justice by refusing to address the point made by Elizabeth Edwards (which at least insofar as I saw it included no personal attacks of any kind)?

What would she have lost in showing a little humanity, instead of turning the whole thing into a cynical exercise in "she's trying to shut me up". All she said was that making derogatory personal comments in lieu of actual, tangible criticisms is beneath contempt.

There is a difference between the world the way it is in reality and the world that you would like it to be.

But why is there this apparent desire to adopt Coulter as part of 'your side' and defend her against the 'lefties'?

As I said, I wouldn't demean the Republican party or its followers by counting Coulter among their number, or someone that they would choose to identify with. Personally speaking, the idea of being even indirectly associated with someone like that makes me want to have a shower.

Would you be going back on your earlier assertions then - based on Stina's point that rather than defend one wacko that is on 'your side' we shouldn't be defending 'any' of them.

Coulter makes a living from making humourless, hate-ridden personal comments about other people that she disagrees with politically. I don't need a lesson in semantics from her to tell me that what she's doing is cheap, wrong and adds nothing to the debate on any of the key issues that beset the country.

It might not be half as bad if she were a comedian - but she presents herself as a serious political commentator.

She's the Iain Paisley of trite commentary.
